Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The Hollywood reporter says that RDJ will be in Spider-man: Homecoming (there have been rumours before, but this is a better source, plus they say the deal has now been finalized). Strangely I am not surprised. I just had a feeling, because he would fit so well.

I saw some spoilers were posted on the film pages and had a question about one which I had read a couple of days ago and wondered if true:

So apparently War Machine ends up paralyzed. Kind of pissed off at that and wondered if there's any discussion of his injury being treated/healed, because I'd think that would totally be possible through Helen Cho's cradle thing and/or Stark tech.

Not sure if it's appropriate for me to ask (will remove this if not).

Are people already putting up spoilers?

Too bad. I think he really would've made a good Vulture.

Thank god! I rather have actors who are enthusiastic about the opportunity to be in the MCU. Keaton didn't strike me as someone who would really want to...and considering that early talks fell through more or less immediately, I most likely was right.

[up][up]Yeah, that's a shame. He would've been great.

Not too shocking given which side Spider-Man was on in the previews.

There's a lot of different ways they can handle Tony Stark in a Spider-Man movie, but I think as long as the central conflict of the movie is more relevant to Peter Parker then Tony Stark it'll work out just fine.

I mostly think that it is great that RDJ is ready to play a side character instead of insisting on being the star all the time.

that sort of reminds me.

Tom Cruise hasn't played any Marvel character. Or any comic book movies, on that matter. Can't imagine he could have been the Iron Man. [lol]

Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing.

Whatever it is I hope Iron Man's not to this movie as Black Widow was to Iron Man 2.

Agreed. Tony trying to seduce Peter would be creepy.

I really hope they show how this generation of youth act. SMHC can be huge by digging into the midsets of high schoolers like a magic school bus trip. In an age where divergent maze runner hunger games twilight mortal instruments I am number four the fifth wave etc run rampant, having characters who reflect our youth is so refreshing.

So Keaton left because they couldn't afford both him and RDJ at the same time.

Suspected as much, considering the news about RDJ in Homecoming came right after the news of Keaton dropping out. Especially since RDJ's contract keeps demanding higher and higher fees with each movie.

The Clone Saga could work. I mean, Spiderverse was basically a modern Clone Saga and did pretty well.

It would work well with a teenaged Spider-Man given that The Jackle is a teacher.
