Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Pretty much that, yes.
I mean, I know I'm supposed to be all, "OMG Thanos!" but it's been four years since I started going "OMG Thanos" and I'm kinda burned out on the excitement. Now I'm more, "Yup, still waiting on Thanos."
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.
like his trope page said, he isn't phased by anyone opposing him. Rather it's his own power and ego that does. Being angry at him won't work cause LOL he redirects it like a mother fucker. Case point Ronan. Thanos thus far has been a troll sitting on his throne. Not an orc. A big fat trolling troll.
Also note his physical actions versus verbal. When Ronan betrayed him he didn't cringe. His eyes widened with curiosity as his smile took up his entire face. He gave Ronan the come at me bro face. Priceless. Now we just have to wait for him to do something proactive. Before he was reluctant, playing a gambit that led to infinity stones stacked up nearly for his taking. Previously he never wanted to have direct influence on the battle field. Meaning he didn't want to be the one fighting and revealing himself. Now he's annoyed at the fact there's no more resources.
Marvel is playing on our preassumed knowledge of Thanos, knowing the dude is capable of mass destruction. All they have to do is show it within the first 15 minutes. EXPLOSIONS. Boom kabbboom. Go in asguard fuck suit up. Go on Earth fuck vision up. Go on cancer fuck shit up. Etc. However, marvel will never go truly dark and edgy so I fear the feats won't be as devastating as they should to warrant people calling him the most powerful being in the galaxy. This is a by they are going straight to the IFG without spending more time on non powered thanos
It's funny how then or had a maximum of no less than 5 minute screen time. And fans are already going crazy. They can't wait anymore, sick of the time building his film up. IW is the climatic downfall. It's a matter of what he does now....... and possibly how. But there's countless of other films before then so it's not time for the hype train.
Yeah telling us we finally get to see Thanos in action is reassuring. Just don't use it 2 years early for marketing hype

I read an assessment of the reviews Civil War is getting, and they noted how people raised the point of how like AOU it definitely has a bunch of sequel and spin-off hooks, but it manages to handle them in a much better and more organic way.
And I'm wondering if perhaps that may be because the Russos' history of working on other peoples' stuff makes them more comfortable in an environment where they have to serve a franchise, whereas Whedon mostly just works on his own stuff.
Yeah, the Russos seem very well suited to the rigours of operating in the universe. They've moved up in the world.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectI think SOME versions of her may be. I can't tell anything definite just by a Google search. There appears to be an animated version that isn't white, but many I've found are white, and I think one looked Asian, but it appears to depend on who's drawing it.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectBendis says she's one quarter Latina
. Probably not significant to raise a ruckus over unless you believe in the rather backwards one-drop rule, so it looks like people are just looking for excuses to drag Whedon through the mud again after his latest interview. Sheesh, people need to stop scapegoating him or making up reasons to continue hating him because he sank their beloved Clintasha or whatever. I'm not a fan of him or how he does a lot of things but the continued hate is bordering on obsessive, cultish, and unhealthy now.
For crying out loud I'm see a fresh wave of people claiming that the shirtless Thor scene in TDW is misogynist somehow (was that even him?) for whatever Tumblr discourse reason they can come up with, such as apparently it infantilizes women by reducing them to their sexual urges or whatever.

Right, because women don't like some beefcake from time to time, and only men can enjoy fanservice. Sound logic there, internet.
It is just amazing how the guy makes one movie that doesn't really nail everything (and some of which isn't even his fault), and suddenly he goes from a geek favourite to public enemy of the month.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectThere's definitely panels where her skin is brown but comics colourists have no consistency so there's also panels where she looks white. I've definitely seen her name spelled María before which would imply she's Hispanic. Also, I think most people are more familiar with her from EMH, where she is definitely not white
.
Ultimately it would have been nice to have a woman of colour in such a prominent role from the beginning of the movies. And a Hispanic character who isn't evil or a criminal. So people are obviously going to be disappointed when there was a chance for representation but Marvel went with a white woman.

That's the variation I was thinking of.
In any case, I've not found anything 100% definite about her ancestry anywhere aside from the Bendis post (and that's just the one guy), so I can't say whether Cobie Smulders is a bad choice or even if it's particularly wrong.
I don't even think it's a mediocre film, so I'm even more baffled. I'm definitely up for the hashtag 'Give Joss Whedon a Break Already'

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectFemininazis are mad because they showed an attractive guy and they were attracted to him. Disregarding the whole 'men can be just as attractive as women' thing being a huge part of the other side of actual gender equality, isn't that their 'fault' for being attracted in the first place? Showing women as attractive objectifies them, showing men as attractive infantilizes them. Clearly the solution is to only hire ugly people and never acknowledge sexual attraction, you know, that thing that is literally the basis of life itself, as a thing that exists.

Hmm, that would explain things.
I don't know if they even count as feminists. They hate Whedon first (because it's cool to I guess) and think of a reason for it later. Said reason doesn't even have to be coherent. It's frighteningly common in fandom to see legitimate social justice issues get hijacked or twisted around to justify petty grudges or feel self-righteous over non-issues.
Ship T'Chucky? You're an apologist for abusive relationships (never mind that some fans might have been in actual abusive relationships before). Don't ship T'Chucky? You're a racist who hates black people (never mind that some non-fans might be black themselves). There's no winning sometimes.

@Alley: Yeah, if that's their only exposure to the character I can see why they would be upset, but there's enough variation on this character that I'm not sure that that one depiction is 100% rock-solid evidence in their favour that Whedon did something untoward.
Also, that ship name is dumb.

I can get behind that. The whole Bennifer thing all those years ago has left us with a legacy of terrible portmanteau ship names.
There's a term that should die in a fire.

Very amused that on set they were apparently referred to as "Cap's two girlfriends."
There's a lot of stuff in there I can see legitimately being annoyed about (like I know l lot of Jewish fans who were upset about the changes to the Maximoff twins, or the whole Black Widow romance and flashbacks), I just don't think it was Whedon trying to be an evil monster.

Yeah, I mean once I have run the gauntlet of emotions for Civil war, there is Doctor Strange and Got G Vol 2 waiting in the woodworks, and once I survived that, there is more Loki and Spider-man and Black Panther...I don't have the energy to be excited for Infinity War at this point. ask me again in two years.
