Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I can't really blame Snyder for trying to compare them. At this point Marvel is DC's direct competition. They need to somehow convince people their universe is worth getting invested in over Marvel's.

He could've done it without putting Marvel down in the same sentence. That just invites negativity. Not to mention Snyder in general is a bit of a PR headache, even for DC fans. At least Sebastian Stan's response was pretty amusing.

Yeah, I'm sitting here and I'm listening to you and I'm thinking, "Do I want to fire some shots at DC right now, at Zack Snyder?"

Something about, "It's not going to be your flavor-of-the-week Ant-Man." And I was like, "Oh thanks, Zack. That's great. Way to do something original. But I would say we're still making something very original in our own way. I mean, the Russos are coming in and taking something people are used to and they're shaping it up and changing it in a very different way. They're not trying to mimic a better Christopher Nolan movie or something like that.

I agree with Sebastian Stan's criticism and Snyder invited that kind of response, but I just don't really like this kind of behavior in general no matter who's doing it. I feel like it's easy to promote or defend the merits of your work without belittling other creators.

The thing is, the smugness makes the blow back ten times more intense whenever Marvel bests him because now it looks like he had it coming. People have been joking for weeks that his "Greatest gladiator match in history!!!!!!" can't even touch the numbers of the last Iron Man flick.

He just invites this level of mockery with his big talk.

I'm not approving of the way he's doing it. I just think some amount of comparisons are inevitable.

There are a number of ways you can sell the DCEU with PR talk and comparing it with the MCU in a way nobody will get mad.

" Marvel have certainly achieved something really significant with their cinematic universe, and nobody can really deny how enjoyable their movies can be. It's exactly because of this that I and WB have decided that the last thing we want is to copy them point-for-point. We have to stand out and craft our own path, and that's why Mo S and now Bv S are the way they are. If we're just off-brand Marvel, there's no reason for people to care about what we're doing. It's either make something different and stand out, or bust. I feel really privileged that I've been given this opportunity to work with these iconic characters, and I want to put them in situations that really challenge them and their values, and show what being a hero is really all about."

etc etc

At 2:04:15, he basically says that Marvel realises that several of their films can be perceived as cluttered, a series jokes calling them "Two hour commercials for the next two hour long commercial", and that their aim is to make all Phase 3 movies "run the gambit of looks and feels". He says that the pressure of working on the Strange script was to not make it fall in line with the tonality of other parts of the universe, but to make it as different as possible.

He also talks about why certain directors left Marvel and the controversy over the Ancient One.

Okay. I just want to say Yao the Ancient One predates early 20th century Tibet because he was born five hundreds years ago in Kamar Tania, a magical land that later became Tibet when "insert name" decided to change it to Tibet. To my knowledge, Yao has never considered himself Tibetan either since its history rarely was apart of his own story. Until he met Dr. Druid, he wondered the greater world, exploring not only almost every place on Earth but other dimensions as well. That happened for 400 something years. Then when he did meet Dr. Druid it was through a disguise, impersonating the High Lama, who is someone entirely different. This moment marked the one time Tibetan Buddhism was used for the man's story. A plot tool.

With the knowledge above, I hope the community here realizes Tibetian anything is not integral to the character. Unless you want the studio to follow ignorant stereotypes Marvel comics set in place. I am only saying this because a few people keep on repeating he's Tibetan and it's very important for the chacater's life.

Though there was supposed to be a Yao comic. "YAO, BABY! ANDY KUHN ON THE CHALLENGES OF THE 'YOUNG ANCIENT ONE".

If anyone ask, yes the Ancient One is a title just like Feige said. Stephen was not the first to learn from him, yet we never gain information on the others sad. According to Jim Valentino's GOG, he is the 3090th student and Ancient One.
