Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

They probably want to set it where they film it.

Question: would it be more offensive if Doctor Strange changes Tibet to Nepal or doesn't specify the country and instead goes for a generic Mystical East thing?

Like, I really love the character but I'm aware Strange is tied up with all sorts of unpleasant and outdated ideals (Mighty Whitey, Far East etc) so I'd love it if the movie could find a way to reconcile all that.

Even if China would allow it, it would be incredible expensive to bring all the equipment into an area which is located fairly high, hasn't the best infrastructure to begin with and the little bit which was there suffered because of the 2015 earthquake which not only hit Nepal, but Tibet, too. Honestly, Marvel was kind of lucky that they had so much trouble to find the right Doctor Strange.

And I kind of hope that they don't specify where Doctor Strange finds his enlightenment, so that everyone assumes it is Tibet.

The occupation of Tibet and China's efforts to keep it under wraps means filming in Tibet is going to be difficult for the foreseeable future. Marvel isn't filming a documentary of China's war crimes, however. They're filming a blockbuster superhero movie about a man who uses magic to fight demons. I'm not sure at what point it became their responsibility to make a global stand and rally the world to drive China out of Tibet. They're a film studio, not the United Nations. This is a bit outside their jurisdiction when they can just go shoot their movie somewhere else.

Expecting Marvel to raise a fuss over the Tibetan genocide for the sake of filming their movie there is a bit like expecting Starbucks to stand up to Putin and defend human rights against Russia. It's asking an awful lot from a company that's just trying to do business.

I think the issue is that Nepal isn't doubling for Tibet.

I hope that too. Feige didn't say definitively that the film isn't set in Tibet in his interview; he just said they're trying to avoid tying the Ancient One's monastery to a specific culture and that Strange simply "headed east".

All they have to do is avoid identifying a region by name and people can draw whatever conclusion they want. It can even enhance the mysticism by not providing a geographic location for the secret magic monastery.

Wouldnt making it generic East Asian locale sort of be invoking the stereotypes of East Asian-based mysticism stuff by basically saying the nation doesn't matter and they're all pretty much the same anyway? Or am I taking it a step too far?

Wait, didn't they already finish filming Doctor Strange? So, why is everybody thinking they'll get rid of the parts in Tibet?

Also, does no one else realize that Mary Sue article was from Monday, June 29th 2015?

Because they filmed in Nepal, not Tibet. At its heart, that's what this is about. They filmed in Nepal and Feige said they're removing Tibet from the cultural inspiration of the monastery, so people are up in arms over the MCU accommodating China and refraining from talking about the genocide.

And I'm pointing out that filming in Tibet would be impractical if not impossible anyway and that the MCU isn't a Human Rights Organization or the U.N., so they wouldn't exactly be the right people to expect to lead the charge against China's abuses.

[up][up]Why would the date of the article really change anything? They wouldn't have changed the location of Strange's training midway into production.

The Marvel movies have often doubled locations. The Tennessee scenes in Iron Man 3 were shot in North Carolina. The Winter Soldier had Washington DC scenes shot in Cleveland. They aren't tied to making their film site be strictly the setting of the plot.

And of course I doubt they'll actually be shooting in Wakanda.tongue

Jon Favreau will be executive producing the Infinity War movies, like the past Avengers films.

I guess this is the right opportunity to mention how pleased I am that they actually shot in Germany this time around instead of trying to sell some American town as German.

They adjusted the numbers upwards quite a bit from the first predictions....

to be honest, I will kind of enjoy that I will most likely be able to say "told you so" in three weeks to everyone who called me crazy when I said Civil War would blow the competition out of the water if it is any good (and I never doubted that it would be).

In fairness as dumb as his comments are he is kinda right in that Batman and Superman (probably Spider-Man as well) exist on a higher level in the public consciousness as characters than Ant-Man. As good as the movie was, he'll still be seen as basically another superhero, while people who've never even read a superhero comic in their lives will still know who Batman and Superman are.

And what does it say about Zack's abilities as a director when these "flavor of the month" wannabes get better reviews than, and are now poised to outgross, his "icon" movie?

Whowho Since: May, 2012

Zack didn't say the Avengers weren't icons, he said ANT-MAN wasn't. And, while I agree with Kevin; you only need a film to your name to become A-list, it is notable that Ant-Man had less cultural impact than other superhero movies. Certainly less impact than BVS despite being the better film.

Batman v. Superman's main cultural impact has been being a Fountain of Memes so far. And Ant-Man & The Wasp will probably be getting the Colbert Bump after Civil War anyway.

Marvel never really had a thing like the Superfriends or Batman or Superman show/radio show that established the DC characters as Iconic.

Before the MCU, Marvel mainly had the Spider-Man and X-Men 90s cartoons and the Hulk show I think.

I don't really feel like we need to compare Bv S to Civil War or play "Marvel vs DC" in order for each of those movies to be enjoyed and/or criticized on their own merits. Saying Bv S is flavor of the month is a disingenuous assessment of what that film has become since release.

With that said, Snyder needs to stop putting his foot in his mouth because by doing so he's encouraging these kinds of annoying comparisons.
