Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up][up] A groin attack is certainly painful, but it is still impossible for a man to kick a woman in the balls because the equivalent to said balls is less exposed for a woman. There is also nothing which you can "squeeze together" in a sense, so I go out on a limp here and suspect that while a groin attack is painful, it is less painful than a kick into the balls. Also based on a fact that I have seen men in real life react to an accidental punch at this particular part of the anatomy, and considering how strong the reaction already is when there is no power behind it (a woman would react with an indignant "oww"), I would say that this is the one thing in fighting were the woman has the biological advantage.

I loved the look on Tony's face when he actually managed to get the gun away.

A successful groin attack to someone with a vagina would be a lot more painful and debilitating than a groin attack to someone with testicles. But getting a direct hit on the testicles is substantially easier because they're so exposed.

The reason it hurts less for people with testicles is because the balls are actually in the way of hitting the nerves responsible for both legs, which, in a fight, are far more valuable.

In other news, I find it hilarious seeing unarmored Tony Stark just rushing in there with nothing but a high tech glove and his nerd glasses. It's like seeing Shawn from Accounting going at a Transformer with an overhead projector and a magnet.

He could always send the Stark Industries interns to fight him.

Here's the full Team Iron Man vs. Bucky fight. T'Challa's a beast.

[up][up]We've known forever he wasn't going to be wearing a purple mask or spandex.

[up] I think the purple mask is most likely going to come later since I get the impression that he's going to be a recurring villain in the MCU. Sort of like how Crossbones was your standard Hydra agent (if an exceptionally skilled one) in the Winter Soldier but switched to something a lot closer to his traditional costume in Civil War.

All the new info they're releasing is definitely whetting my appetite for this film, but i hope they don't accidentally go too far and give too much of the movie away.

I don't know about that. He blocks all her kicks except for one after Nat stuns him and then he swiftly takes her out.

I would think you'd have a bigger issue with Tony actually keeping up for 10 seconds considering he's just an average human rather than a former SHIELD agent.

Yeah, I was going to say.

Tony Stark should have all the physical powers of a fifty year-old pampered jillionaire who treated his body like garbage for the overwhelming majority of his life.

My various fanfics.
