Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Never understood the point of a ratings system beyond vigintigrade. When you're going down into the centigrade zone it gets kinda nitpicky and flamebaity.
Anyway Rotten Tomatoes is up with its initial score of 14/14 fresh reviews.

Don't look at Faraci's though
. He casually drops plot spoilers without warning and the one he does bother to actually tag seems pretty minor (haven't checked but I think it's one I've been spoiled elsewhere on).

I think it's a joke about IGN's infamous Pokemon ORAS review where they took points off for "too much water".

Another fairly unspoilery review from USA Today which is also very positive.
Glad to hear another review praise the movie for this. Always thought the Russos' ability to pack so much development and character moments into each scene and juggle multiple characters without making it bloated was a big strength of the last one.
A not-so-pleased review from Forbes
.
Damn. Poor lady better hire some good bodyguards cuz the shipping Fan Dumb is going to be after her head hardcore. I've already seen Ineffectual Death Threats about firebombing Marvel and the Russo brothers' offices if they don't make Stucky canon over the last few months similar to the sunk-Clintasha fiasco.

Sad thing is this kinda talk is pretty common across all fandoms.
Anyway, if I'm reading the IGN review right, my speculation for the Steve and Sharon interaction is they probably kiss right after Peggy's funeral or something which is probably where the Squick factor comes in.

Right? From Batman to Birdman to whoever-is-the-bad-guy-in-this-Spider-Man-movie!
And yeah, I can see him being Norman Osborn/Green Goblin. Either him or Matthew McConaughey.
By the way, anyone notice how it's pretty weird in an ironic way that some of these guys used to do DC movies and some of the guys at DC did Marvel movies beforehand?
- Hugo Weaving was V before becoming the Red Skull.
- J. K. Simmons was J. Jonah Jameson before becoming Commissioner Gordon.
- Ben Affleck was Daredevil before becoming Batman.
- Tilda Swinton was Gabriel before becoming The Ancient One.
- and now Michael Keaton was Batman before becoming "Untitled Spider-Man Villain".
Next thing you know, we'll have Keanu Reeves as Moon Knight and Emma Stone as Poison Ivy.

Oh yeah. That too.
Sorry, guess I was having a moment when my crack casting of Keanu and Emma turned into me thinking "holy shit, that sounds like great casting choices."
EDIT: Shoot! I forgot Josh Brolin was Jonah Hex before becoming Thanos.

Tbh I hadn't ever considered Emma Stone for Poison Ivy but I'd be interested in seeing that.
Also, I think if all of this is true I'd probably hedge my bets on Vulture being the villain because of the Meta Casting.
So, Doctor Strange trailer hit, which I imagine has already been discussed. Not much for me personally to talk about there, except to bring up a blog post
reacting to the first appearance of Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One.
In fairness, we pretty much knew this was gonna be the case since the casting was announced. The only specifics were going to be the presentation of Swinton. The whole "white guy learns magic stuff from a white lady in Tibet and uses that to fight bad guys" was basically informed to be premise of the film the moment the casting was announced.
Not saying that it's ok for this to be the case or that people shouldn't be critical of it (it was part of the reason why i was tepid on this film at first).

Faraci's review is in, he loves it.
It's very well written, but there are some slight spoilery things inside.
