Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Okay, I am officially hyped for Dr. Strange. That looks amazing.

Also, I heard something about Spider-Man Homecoming footage. Was that just a rumor?

This song needs more love.

The Strange teaser was quite good. The visuals look impressive, especially since the effects probably aren't completely done yet. I was hoping that they'd let Cumberbatch keep his natural accent as he has such a cool voice, but he does still sound good here regardless. Tilda shaved her head (and kind of looks like "classic" Wong imo) for the role, respect.

In regards to the origin thing, I believe that Feige (or someone else at Marvel) debunked that notion. And there are certain characters who's origins SHOULD be seen on film as they're quite interesting/important in their own right. Dr. Strange is one such character, and Black Panther, and Captain Marvel as well.

I like how the new Spider-man logo font is much different than the previous Spider-man movies' font. It fells very 60s silver age like. I guess 60s Spider-man is all the rage these days.

The subtitle makes me think that Spidey won't be receiving an origin story this time around, which is good. Spidey's origin is actually a really good one to tell "on the go," both because of how simple it is and the kind of character he is - beginning the movie by having him already Spider-Man and then having him make reference to how he failed before and such, brief flashbacks maybe, etc.

Also everyone and their grandma knows at least the basics of Spidey's origins by now, so no real need to do it again.

I doubt that Black Panther will be an origin story...his origin is pretty boring either way, Wakanada itself is the interesting part. The interesting part starts when his father dies, but I don't really see that as origin, more as a stepping stone to the next level for him.

[up] Panther's origin and the fate of Wakanda are closely linked, so it's very unlikely that we'll go without seeing it.

I think Marvel themselves flat out confirmed we won't have to go through Spidey's origin story yet again.

They did. I just think that they debunked that they'd never do origin stories at all.

Well, we know that Spider-Man's origin story won't be told in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2.

The opening narration of the film could just go through all of the major beats in Peter's life in montage. With a quick nod to Civil War, obviously.

I really like the logo. Nice fonts.

They simply could start with a number of Daily Bugles articles about Spider-man and then mention Uncle Ben in a dialogue between Aunt May and Peter at one point in the movie. Or show Peter having a nightmare (though I am usually not for dream sequences).

Really, aside from Superman, Batman and Spider-Man the origins of most superheroes are pretty unknown. That's not even getting into the ones that are subject to retcons so often.

Though the only other upcoming movie which might contain a origin story is Captain Marvel.

Inhumans also due to nothing from Ao S mattering and no moviegoer knowing anything about them but that has been delayed.

I finally realized what that one scene from the Doctor Strange trailer with Strange getting his spirit form punched out of his body reminded me of (4:50-5:10):

For me an origin story is "we show why XY person stopped being "normal" and became a hero instead". Which is why X-men or Inhumans usually don't have an origin story per se. At least I don't count them as origin stories (though Daisy had one of the longest ever).

Not sold on Swinton. The poster with the focus on the window is better than the one with Cumberbatch's face taking up 90% of it. Homecoming's logo sucks.

I actually quite liked her here. Oh and the idea of a male hero being mentored by a female master is something that's sadly extremely rare in comics or comic book films (it's pretty much always the other way around).

That Doctor Strange trailer was not what I was expecting. I know nothing about the character, so when it was teased as "different", I was expecting something more "del Toro different" than "Wachowski/Nolan different".

The cinematography looks good and I have little doubt that the actors will manage to be convincing - now I hope the story will be as original as the setup makes it to be.

They must have worked on some of the more trippy scenes long before they even started shooting.

Question: Do fictional swear words affect the rating of a movie? If Gotg vol 2 used "D'ast" and "Flark" would it get a higher rating?

Lisa Lisa from Jojo being one of the few other instances of such, and even then apparently the author had to fight his editors to let her kick as much ass as she did.

Just saw the Doc Strange teaser. It's visually interesting which is sort of what I expect from a Doctor Strange property ,though I expect more colour fro ma Doctor Strange thing.

Disappointed by two things but they're entirely personal. I never pronounced "Stephen" as with a "V" so this is going to take me out every time. Also that voice is more generic than what I expect from Dr. Strange. I tend to hear it as something more grand or sophisticated.

Oh man, you guys have gotta check out this civil war B-Roll footage, I swear seeing how parts of a movie get made are just as fun as the movie itself.
