Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Actually, the movie is tracking better than Batman v Superman originally did (though naturally tracking was wrong in both cases...it did better opening weekend and will most likely do worse overall when all is said and done), so the interest is certainly there. And in the countries in which it is named "The First Avenger: Civil War" a lot of people will believe either was that it is an Avenger movie. And we all know how well those do at the box office.
Batman v. Superman had a monstrous opening weekend, followed by a meteoric crashing drop in the coming days. The decrease in percentage is worse than any superhero movie ever. Opening weekend it brought in something like 400 million, currently the worldwide box office is less than double that. It's entirely possible it won't even break 1 billion, while Civil War has been significantly more hyped up than Iron Man 3 (remember that IM3 more than broke a billion) was and, if it delivers on the hype, Captain America 3 could very well make enough to be comparable to the Avengers movies.

Well, one thing for sure, Civil War won't make as much in it's first week as Batman v Superman did in terms of worldwide numbers, but that's because it won't open in all markets at once. And it still needs good Wo M, just like Bv S did, or it will crash, too. But let's assume for a moment that the movie is actually as good as some people claim it to be, then I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up actually beating out at least Age of Ultron if not The Avengers. With this line-up everyone who is interested in just one of those heroes will want to see it.
Btw, the current top 15 comicbook adaptions at the box office looks like this:
- Marvel's The Avengers
- The Dark Knight
- Avengers: Age of Ultron
- The Dark Knight Rises
- Iron Man 3
- Spider-Man
- Spider-Man 2
- Deadpool
- Spider-Man 3
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- Iron Man
- Iron Man 2
- Man of Steel
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
- The Amazing Spider-Man
Russos, for sure, at least based on one movie. We'll see how Civil War fares.
I have every reason to feel good about it though, because every time the Russos talk about the movie they just seem intelligent and thoughtful about the process.
As for how well it'll do... it'll be a winner commercially, and I think the fans and critics will be far more aligned on this one than BVS. To be fair, there are probably plenty of regular moviegoers and fans who dislike BVS, but the critics were pretty merciless.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectHard to tell...the sample size isn't big enough (yet). But if the Russo bros knock it out of the Ballpark again with Civil War, they get the top spot.
I actually think that the critics were too nice. Most went for something like a 5 out of 10, which is read as rotten, but actually means "this movie is mediocre". In the end, it's not the critics which sunk the movie. They are only relevant for opening weekend, and most of the fans had purchased their tickets long before their reviews hit. After that, the box office is more a matter of Wo M.

It's kinda rare that filmmakers get such a rep on such a limited filmography.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectI have high hopes for Civil War. Gotta say, I enjoy the snark that Whedon brings to the table, but the Russos seemed to have a knack for grounding their story while still making it light enough that the plot twists didn't send it careening off into grimdark territory.
Let's face it, SHIELD being secretly HYDRA would've been a great chance to go full grimdark.
I don't like Avengers but I think Winter Soldier is the best MCU movie, so Whedon's not even in the running for best director as far as I'm concerned. I've heard pretty consistently that Ao U has a lot of problems so it's fair to bet that watching that wouldn't change my opinion although I'll still be seeing that at some point.

I don't know if it'll necessarily make as much money as Batman v Superman just because the sheer idea of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman who everyone and their grandparents knows about teaming up is that huge of a draw. At the same time it doesn't seem like Marvel spent nearly as much money either making or promoting Civil War as WB did for BvS, so even if the box office is totals end up being a little lower Marvel can afford it and will probably have made more money in the end.
