Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

You know, looking at the documentary for Zootopia, I wonder if Marvel Studios does something similar for their movies when it comes to fleshing out the stories (see 15:17-20:01 for what I'm referring to)?

It would say something about why several directors like Edgar Wright have had problems when it comes to working with Marvel, and why they left.

[up]This is more or less the norm in animation. Filmmaking by committee is more or less the only way an animated movie can work, otherwise you get an incoherent mess. Neither it is unusual that ideas get discarded early on. The famous Spaghetti scene in Lady and the Tramp nearly never happened because Disney thought that the notion was stupid. But the animator in question was so convinced of his vision that he animated the whole thing on his own in his free time.

However it works within the Marvel studios, you can bet that it is done in the way it was done before it was part of the Disney company. Disney isn't really prone to meddling - and I actually think that it was Marvel itself who meddled in the work of Marvel studios so much in the past, that Disney decided to pull the studio away from their influence so that the creative people there can life in peace, without having to worry about toy sales and other nonsense.

You know I just realized: A good chunk of the bad things that happen in the MCU can be traced back to the Kree

RE: MCU!Mindless Ones?: When I first saw the eye makeup on Mads Mikkelsen last night, I was like "oh god, that looks creepy and gross and decompose-y" and then someone pointed out the Mindless Ones and I was like "holy cow, that's right! It does remind me of the Mindless Ones."

Are there any Strange villains with flaming eyes? That's what I keep thinking of when I see the pictures on the previous page.

[up][up][up]Dormammu and his whole family/people who work for him? Fire is pretty much their theme.

[up][up]These guys. They usually serve Dormammu or his sister Umar(who had a...interesting... encounter with Hulk once and who's also the mother of Strange's wife/love interest Clea).

[up][up][up][up] Normally, the Mindless Ones are these humongoloid monsters who are summoned by magic to do the bidding of others (because the Mindless Ones are literally just that. Mindless.).

Oddly enough, these guys appeared in Marvel's recent cartoons, namely Ultimate Spider-Man, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and Avengers Assemble.

But maybe we're gonna see a different take on them in the MCU?

EDIT: [nja].

I heard the reference to Pym was only a deleted scene.

Nah, it's in the film. All those lines are during the same scene.

The line is there, they just don't say Hank Pym. In the original he explicitly says his friend who got hassled by SHIELD was Hank but for some reason Marvel made him change it.

Some very cool concept art for Civil War.

Probably because they knew the movie would be pushed up and wanted to save references to Ant-Man for when it was actually closer to being made.

Nope. As far as we know it's just called the Mark 46. The fact that it looks extremely similar to the Bleeding Edge is probably just a Mythology Gag or Whole Costume Reference.

Interesting to note that the concept art for the team fight at the airport seems to have Sharon instead of Wanda.

I'm wondering now if perhaps Sharon had a bigger role initially and that's why there was so much marketing/promo art that had her instead of Scarlet Witch.

Giant Man and Death's Head trademarked. We already knew about GM in CW so the other is more interesting.

[up] Spoiler tag please! I am still peeved that I carefully avoided Toy-spoilers just for someone to write it here in the forum. I don't want this to happen to anyone else.
