Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Cumberbatch legit looks cool in his Dr. Strange costume, speaking as someone who thought he was visual Narm in a lot of his previous roles.

[up][up] I'm imagining a "BITCH IM FLAWLESS" caption at the bottom of the image.

That's a good thing, by the way, I do agree he looks pretty good in the costume.

I have no doubt in Cumberbatch's ability to carry this movie but let's hope he doesn't have to do it all by himself.

I'm more impressed by the actual costume. It's such a excellent adaptation of his comic self's usual get-up it's not even funny. It's approaching Deadpool levels of well-done

Agreed. It's a great looking costume.

I think it helps that Strange's costume is less of a "standard" hero getup than Cap or Superman's costumes, but I like how little they needed to change it to get it to work in the real world.

It's a little bit more desaturated but much less than you might expect. This might be up there with the Black Panther costume in how good it looks.

I guess I might as well ask, but what exactly are Marvel's plans for Dr. Strange if this movie ends up being successful? Is there anything big he's supposed to be involved in?

I still think Cucumberpatch isn't quite the best fit for the role, but he looks fairly decent with that costume. I would have preferred an older actor, though.

At least they got the greyed sideburns right.

Doctor Strange will certainly be in at least one half of Infinity War, and if his movie is successful then I think we could easily see a Doctor Strange 2 be the first movie of Phase 4.

Who would you have cast otherwise? He's a bit of a boring choice, but I can't really think of anyone better either, aside from Joaquin Phoenix who already turned the role down.

Alexander Siddig.

I mean, have you watched Deep Space Nine? Strange and Bashir are basically the same damn dude. Medics brought low by their own ego who obtain abilities beyond those of mortal men.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

He'd need a beard. And a deep voice.

Which I'm not sure if Strange actually has, but that's my headcanon, and I'm sticking to it.

I actually thought the random fan suggestion of Pedro Pascal was a pretty good fit for the role.

But if you ask me, I'd have cast Liam Neeson.

[up][up][up][up]Is using the Hand's resurrection-urn-thingy to bring Vincent Price back to life to play Strange a valid option?

Failing that, I don't really have any specific actor in mind, I just think Cumberbatch looks a bit off in the role visually. Matthew Modine could have nailed the look with a bit of hair darkening, but the only film of his I've actually seen is Full Metal Jacket so I don't know if he could nail the role properly.

Joaquin Phoenix would also have been good, though.

Even if Cumberbatch is a bit younger than I'd like I'm at least confident in his acting, though.

Vincent Price is too easy since Strange was based on him :'p

Above all Cumberbatch is a very dedicated actor. He really is. There are few who take acting as serious as he does.

Should Cumberbatch's Strange talk like Vincent Price?
