Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

It's true. That's why Disney's had to resort to crazy loopholes like: when they unveiled an Avengers train skin for Walt Disney World, their contract with Universal said no Marvel rides in Disney World. So Disney decided to consider "Disney World" as "The Magic Kingdom" and had the train circle around EPCOT without actually entering the park.
Jessica Henwick from The Force Awakens will be playing Colleen Wing

Oh god why.
Really? Another GOT actor who has no idea how to stage fight in Iron Fist?
... not to mention the whole But Not Too Foreign thing of casting a half-Asian as Colleen. That's just... really surprising.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. But the thing is, considering how... awkward the Netflix shows have been with Asians right now (with Daredevil being borderline Yellow Peril, and the cries for Danny to be played by an Asian), it's genuinely surprising they didn't go with a full blooded Asian Actress for this part.
... my main point remains, though. Seriously. I would've happily had her played by a black woman if she could fight.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. That just seems like splitting hairs, tbh. There's a lot of things you can critique the MCU on, but being mad about them hiring a mixed actress to play a mixed character seems like looking for something to complain about.
Marvel posted this about her casting

I will say that I thought the character was at least 3/4 Asian. I know she's Japanese on her mother's side, but her last name is Wing, which I mostly know as a Chinese name.
And seriously. I'm more surprised at the casting in terms of race. Seems like a no-brainer for them. I'm not complaining, just surprised. Given they're starting to take heat for the aforementioned Unfortunate Implications, I'd think they'd take the easy way out on this one.
I am complaining they again chose someone who can't fight. Seriously. They genuinely couldn't find an actress I want to see fight less.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. The thing that bothers me the most is that she played one of the much loathed and terribly acted Sand Snakes, and while a lot of people like Jessika Pava she didn't do much of note besides look cool. Not necessarily terrible, but not the strongest resume either. Though she apparently did learn to use the whip for Game of Thrones, which is better than nothing.
Anyway as one of the people who liked the idea of Danny Rand being Asian, if the rumors that Shang Chi is going to be in the show are true then I'll be OK with him being white.
Regarding "Wing", it's not a word that exists in Mandarin, and it's way more common as a first name than a last name in Cantonese. Can't speak for other varieties of Chinese, but it's kinda like how some people think Long is a common Chinese name when some people do have it but it's usually found with Anglo-Saxons like Huey Long.

Not really. Wing is an English surname as well.
The only way this somehow plays into that is if you're suggesting being mixed race makes you less of a person of color, which is a whole other explosive can of worms.

I really only know about the Sand Snakes thing second hand, but was that really her fault? If it was such a poorly received fight across the board, then maybe it was a directling issue?
Love it. Fits his character perfectly. Some might say that they're dumbing it down, but I think the purple face paint and tiara works much better than the normal costume.

Oh God! Natural light!

I have heard a rumour how Civil war will end:
Tony is about to kill Steve but then he realizes that both their best friends share James as first name.
Sorry, couldn't resist....
