Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

What's funny is before Affleck's Career Resurrection some years ago, I read an article where someone made a snarky joke about Daredevil by saying how terrible it must be for Evanescence to owe their career to Ben Affleck.

Now that Affleck is a respected filmmaker and Evanescence has become a punchline, you feel like the joke would be going the other way. (How terrible it must be for Ben Affleck to know he unleashed that on the world).

I don't think Bv S has really hurt his reputation that much either, since a lot of people are still very supportive of him and his performance and think he was one of the best parts of the film.

I've heard that and I've heard the same about Wonder Woman.

Batfleck and Wonder Woman is what I've heard in terms of best parts.

Also, Elektra's way of saying "leave me alone" was trying to beat Matt to death after she already knew he was blind.

The suit in the Daredevil movie still beats anything in the TV show hands down for me.

Yeah. It's surprising how well that costume holds up.

Eh it always looked a bit too much like fetish gear to me.

Not That There's Anything Wrong with That.

Like, that's kind of a good thing though? People wear fetish gear because it looks cool. Daredevil thus looks cool.

I guess that could give narm effect to people if they have preconceptions about fetish gear and men who wear fetish gear.

I don't know anything about that, man, but suffice to say I can see why some people didn't like it.

Early critic screenings for Civil War.

Marvel must be really confident in it if they're letting the critics see it this early.

Would the movie even be finished by now?

The movie was probably finished back in February and up until May is just promotion.

Marvel is practically oozing confidence when it comes to Civil War.

It's not unusual for films to be ready for test audiences half a year in advance, I know I've seen films six months before release; release dates are factors of marketing more than a deadline for finishing it.

[up] With Marvel, they are pretty much a deadline. I am ready to bet that they are still working on finishing up the last touches of the CGI.

It's not like it really helped with Ao U. The CGI that looked dodgy in the TV spots and trailers still looked dodgy in the movie later. CGI is finished early. It's final editing that might be finished a few weeks before premier.

I mean a proper shade of purple not the reddish thing he's been rocking the past two movies.

I can't believe it took them this long to realize "We can do purple and not look like a living cartoon!"

I still find it weird that they didn't call the ship Aurora(nicknamed Rora) like Quill's ship in the comics before Annihilation.
