Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Random rambling.

It would have been hilariously bizarre if Ben Affleck played the Punisher in Daredevil. evil grin

in fact...is the daredevil movie so bad really? I mean he have his issues, like moving between Goofy and serious between scenes but is not a bad movie at all.

I hear the director's cut was better.

The movie had Matt and Elektra bonding over his stalker-ish quips while they spar in a playground. It had Elektra killed in a anticlimactic manner, and Matt supposedly proving he's "not the bad guy" by not killing the Kingpin despite having subjected dozens of other crooks to gruesome deaths. And it had Colin Farrell doing I don't know what as Bullseye.

That mime assassin is actually terrifying from what little I've read.

I would love for Hawkeye to get deafened in Civil War, it would add to the tragedy a fair bit and bring in something from the comics which makes the character interesting, and make the avengers a little more representative.

[up]I feel like the look and performances of Matt, Bullseye and Fisk were all really good, but the script is poop.

Theres things I like, such as Matt having to sleep in a sensory deprivation tank. But, the script is poop. Also Elecktra isn't even Elecktra. She's the character Echo, but white, able to hear, and dressed like Elecktra with her name.

It was from that post-Crouching Tiger period where everyone in Hollywood thought wire fighting was the greatest fucking cinematic innovation of all time.

Seriously. Look at how ridiculous and needless the wire work in the playground fight was.

Okay I actually like the stupid playground fight.

The director's cut is a pretty decent flick. The movie's general problem is pretty shitty fight scenes, bad cgi, inconsistent Daredevil characterization, the plot is rushed and lacks impacts, and Kingpin is only a so-so villain. Also a pretty bad sountrack.

Bullseye is great though.

Like that constantly used war scene thing where an explosion goes off nearby and the audio just goes dead and finally comes back with a high tone

except with Hawkeye I guess it just wouldn't have the sound coming back
