Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I believe it is also a matter of evidence. There is ample evidence Loki had brainwashing power because he kept using that power once every two seconds in the Avengers. There's literal video footage of him doing it when he came through the portal.

It's likely that the HYDRA remnanets covered up their tracks expertly, and left no evidence Bucky was brainwashed in any way. If that's the case, the only witness to back up the theory of Bucky being brainwashed is Capt himself.

There's also no evidence that the brain washing is over for Bucky.

Yeah, they might sympathize with Bucky and his circumstances, but consider him too dangerous in the present to be left free or alive, much like a rabid animal.

Also, a point that is missed a lot is that Bucky obviously ends up framed for some serious crime at some point in the movie.

I'm sure people would consider Clint a criminal too if after the stuff with Loki there was evidence that he was still randomly murdering people.

Jesus, imagine if Kilgrave just waltzed into the big battle between Thanos and the Avengers and instructed them to just give him the gauntlet. Would the Mind Stone protect Thanos from his powers, or...?

The idea of any of the Netflix characters interacting with the movies is fun to think about because it's such a HUGE tonal clash. Kilgrave in particular is such a genuinely terrible person that I don't remember the last time I actually felt so much disgust towards one character.

Bucky and Kilgrave meeting. Now that would be messed up.

Vision would be immune and sort him out swiftly.

Unless Kilgrave planned for that and ordered someone to stick a fridge magnet on Vision's head. tongue

Ant-Man, Iron Man, and War Machine would probably be immune though anyway by virtue of wearing hermetic suits.

Uh, yeah, by movie standards the show characters are pretty much non-existant. So, uh, not important to the movies.

And Vision too might not be immune due to Wanda being able to read his mind.

Wanda's powers are magic. Kilgrave's are super science and also biochemical. Being a robot or hermetically sealed off can protect you from him, but not from her.

Vision could as much get mind controlled by Kilgrave as he could get the flu.

If I remember correctly, experiments brought out powers she already had.

In any case I feel comfortable saying that her powers work differently from Kilgrave, who explicitly has to infect folks with a biological virus.

One of the best/most horrible things about Kilgrave is how if he actually had any ambition he could've waltzed into Stark Industries and in a handful of steps come very close to taking over the world - especially since at the time nobody actually knew he or anybody like him existed.

But it says a lot about the kind of person he is that that never even occurs to him, because he's too busy treating people like objects for his hedonistic comfort and leaving destroyed lives in his wake. The fact that so many supervillains are so much larger than life keeps them from being as creepy as they could be, but the times when they do evil in mundane and true to life ways can be more chilling than anything else.

Well Ultron is a robot and yet she couldn't read his mind. But since she could when he was uploading himself to Vision, it implies that her powers need something biological to tap into, which makes them a bit more "science" than "magic".

The virus thing, though, who knows. Maybe Vision has the world's greatest immune system.

I'm sure his singleminded obsession with Jessica and contentment with a simple hedonistic lifestyle are part of it, but it's also likely that he wants to keep a low profile.

Reserving the use of his powers for just a few civilians whom nobody will believe is more low-key than hijacking the minds of well-known corporate leaders or superheroes, and once he makes the wrong people suspicious that he's got mind control powers he's liable to get a sniper round through the head.
