Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Do the quips break the tension of action scenes or do they make the scenes more real and have more weight? Personally, I'm solidly on the latter, but this is a conversation that we've had a lot, and it never really goes anywhere. (by the way, though, how does "I'm bringing the party to you" ~cue reveal of leviathan~ "I don't see how that's a party" indicates a drop in IQ? Not everyone is always on point, nor does everyone always want to be. Sometimes half-assing sarcasm is fine.)

I think it depends on the character. There are certain quips which only fit certain characters. It also depends on the situation. Ie when Natasha and Steve discuss that they might be forced to destroy the floating city with everyone on it, they aren't quipping. Nor does anyone make a joke over Quicksilver's dead body.
Yeah, best joke in the film.
The way Banner breaks down and Thor just goes "...was it something I said?" is fantastic.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."Well, for me the worst jokes were thor saying "I dont know what much to said" while distracting Ultron, Hawkeye discusing about his home IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BATTLE and Ultron "In retrospective" each of this manage to drop the threating level of the situation to pretty much zero, which make Ultron killing Quicksilver come as out of the blue. he looks he just got lucky.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"What people need to realize is that Age of Ultron and Civil War are done by two completely different creative teams with two completely different storytelling styles.
For better or for worse, throwing in jokes in the middle of serious moments is kinda Joss Whedon's whole thing. Winter Soldier and The First Avenger, while having jokes, generally left them out of the more serious bits.
Even them the jokes are pretty much part of MCU as whole, like Thor 2, Iron man 3 or Antman, so far the only movies without jokes in the final fight are Iron 2(since in two short) Winter soldier(by most serious tone) and funny thing is, Guardian of the galaxy.
Winter Soldier has jokes in the final fight...but they happening around Falcon and not during the big climatic fight between Cap and Bucky where they certainly don't belong. Got G has jokes, too, but they are less quips and more born out of the situation...like Peter's "They got my dick message" and Groot smiling in the camera after killing a bunch of expandable henchmen.
I want to see Civil War in theaters but I don't think I have the money for it anymore. Kinda unfortunate, but I guess that'll give me something to look forward to if I hear it ends up being as good as I hope.
I'm not really worried about the movie at all since Winter Soldier juggled a lot of things very competently and was genuinely a pretty great film, so I have high hopes.
what fills me with confidence more than anything else is that Marvel is obviously not concerned about bad reviews. They will screen the movie pretty early and release it in different markets to different times. (I am currently thinking about buying a ticket for the pre-premiere, which is in exactly one month....nearly 20 Euro, but it might be worth it....)
Ok, I have noticed something: marvel fans like to talk how dark DC is and al the stuff, but after watching Avenger again I noticed how dark everything get after that.
-Loki was stoped and Fury said he will be punished....one movie latter, BLAM he is fucking king of asgard, tricking everyone YET again
-Shield stands....wait not, it was Hydra all alone and Bucky was there as their weapon
-we have new avenger like falcon,Wanda and warmachine...and they are going to beat each other now, with huge posibilities someone dies from this fight
And of course, this isnt counting things like Hulk runing away, Wanda being easly forgiven, Im not saying is depresing or anything but Marvel fans since to understimed how dark is everything now.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"No, Marvel never did...ie they like to release the Thor movie in Australia first, because they have a good chance that this will create a positive buzz.
And I have always said that Marvel is way more serious than people give it credit for. Despite all the jokes, it already dealt with PTSD, Terrorism, Security v personal freedom aso. I personally consider the Captain America franchise the best, not just because it is the most political of them all, but because it has the worst consequences, especially on a personal level. Steve decides to fight for his country because he feels that he can't do less and he ends up disconnected from everything he knew. He then has trouble to adjust to civilian live, realizes that the organisation he is fighting for is corrupt and is forced to take it down, even though it is the life work of the woman he loves. He is forced to fight Bucky because million of lives are at stake, but once he has done what he needed to do for "the greater good", he just stops fighting, allowing Bucky to hurt him badly simply because he is his friend.
The difference between Marvel and DC is that, where darkness is concerned, Marvel picks its moments. They seem to realize that darkness means more with light around it.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. His comment about pre-war Bucky being a father figure to Steve makes a lot more sense with this in mind. Still kind of a weird way to look at things, especially since the implication I got from Bucky in the other two movies was that he was one of the few people to not look down on Steve all that much, relatively speaking, but it makes it a more dramatic role reversal.
Also a lot of people on Tumblr are unsurprisingly in uproar over this, because their former fave just crossed the Moral Event Horizon by not wearing his Shipping Goggles as tightly as other people. Time to bring out the popcorn.
After pressure from Marvel, Disney, and others, the governor of Georgia will be vetoing the religious liberty bill
.

The Winter Soldier I think struck the right balance between quips for relief amidst heavy tension. Fury's car chiming in that "air conditioning is fully operational" still hammered in just how screwed he was at the moment, as was Falcon's "had to take a detour!" or "forty-first floor!"
