Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Since when the hell is Captain Britain an "iconic" character?

[up][up]Iconic is a word people love to use to describe any superhero that's been around for a long time, even when most people outside of comic fandom have no idea who they are.

[up]Yes, because it makes absolutely no sense for people to know about something they are not particularly fan of. Seriously, dude, let that fandom disdain go.

Anyway, who exactly is Captain Britain?

An X-Men affiliated character, from what little I know.

Only thing I remember about him that he's related to Psylocke.

Captain Britain is an X-Men character only insofar as the X-Men interact with the British cast from time to time. His sister is Psylocke but that only means as much as the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver being the children of Magneto did.

Billy Braddock, aka Captain Britain, is one of several British superheroes in the Marvel universe - most of whom are members of groups like MI-13 or Excalibur. He's effectively the U.K.'s answer to Captain America and debuted with his own solo title in 1976 as part of an imprint meant to reach out to U.K. audiences, called Marvel U.K. He's a flying brick with powers originally granted by the wizard Merlin, and he's gone through a few variations over the years such as only having powers when he's in the U.K. or having his powers linked to his confidence so he's exactly as powerful as he believes himself to be.

He's also a member of the Captain Britain Corps, a multidimensional coalition of the Captain Britains from every universe who work together to defend the Multiverse.

Only other thing I know about him was that a Muslim woman named Faiza briefly took over for him and people naturally got butthurt about it.

Haha, no way Tony is that close. Bucky is more of the wife, and Tony is the Yandere Stalker with a Crush tongue

Yes, because it makes absolutely no sense for people to know about something they are not particularly fan of.

That's sorta my point. "Iconic" characters tend to be the ones people know about even if they're not fans or actively looking into them. Captain Britain is not a character people who aren't actively fans of Marvel comics know.

Spider-Man is iconic. Wolverine is iconic. The Hulk is iconic.

Seriously, dude, let that fandom disdain go.

I'm not even sure what you're talking about.

Captain Britain is also the reason the mainstream Marvel universe is 616—the author was taking the piss on DC's "Earth-1", and trying to make the Marvel universe seem small and unimportant.

Fans didn't get the joke.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Looking for info on the artist, she does seem to be a real person who actually does movie posters for studios. Not sure if the twitter account itself is actually hers though.

There is some meaning to the 616 classification. It's the mark of the beast. Writer Dave Thorpe originally came up with it to express his disdain for superhero stories.

@Comicwriter: "Iconic" is a relative term. You could arguably say, let's say, Toshiro Mifune is a iconic actor of Japanese cinema, but is he iconic to the post-modern philosophy? No. Captain Britain could be reasonably descibred as iconic within the context of marvel comic books. It just means he's not iconic to pop culture.

Okay, let's pretend that is legit...does this mean that a lot of English mythology is connected to his stories? He gets his power from Merlin, doesn't he? That could actually make an interesting TV show...

Quotes.

Also, weren't they trying to push universe 8 as the replacement? Which is sort of the same joke but scaled waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back.

Then again I saw somewhere else that its supposed to be Earth-Prime now. Boo.

Yes, actually. Marvel UK is linked to Avalon, also known as Otherworld. It's a realm of magic and fantasy where much of British folklore takes place. It's a land of leprechauns, faeries, dragons, and ogres with notable locations like the Court of Camelot. There are a few secret methods of travelling between Avalon and Britain.

The Starlight Citadel where the Captain Britain Corps. meet is located in Avalon.

Sooo I am a bit lost. Is Captain Britain a mutant, or are his power magic-related?

Magic. The character's changed over the years, but whether he's drawing it from Merlin or a magical talisman or what have you, he's never been a mutant, nor has he ever been an X-Man (although he has been an Avenger).
