Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Again...can you move this discussion to the Daredevil threat? You are revealing more than some might want to know about the last season.

[up]Sorry, I didn't realize there were fans who didn't know about that story arc. It was advertised in the trailers after all.

[up] You have already been dropping a couple of details concerning the arc during the discussion. Plus, there are fans who avoided the last trailer because they felt that they already knew enough about the show. Better safe than sorry.

Daredevil fights ninjas. Its one of his big things. I haven't seen seasons 2, but I assumed The Hand would be involved.

Marvel specifically didn't say "The Hand are in S2" in that "Here are all of Daredevil's friends and enemies in the comics" with the characters in the series saying so beneath them.

Sooooo here's a completely unrelated topic, and one I don't think has been brought up yet: do you think they should have Death and Thanos' relationship with it mentionned in the MCU?

Since he wanted to court Death in Avengers 1 and that would just be a big WTF moment if it was never brought up again, yes.

Depends on how they handle it.

I think it would be fine if they leave Death's actual existence ambiguous.

At this point I no longer care about it.

[up]I kinda do. I mean, it's the one thing preventing Thanos from being a Generic Doomsday Villain.

That's a pretty baseless claim to make. The guy had 3 cameos, wait until he gets a movie to show his lack of personality first.

Since the Russo brothers and their writing team will be largely responsible for bringing Thanos on screen, I am confident.

[up][up][up]True, but that would mean the writer would bring him a new motivations. I was going with the assumption they just sticked his motivations to "power angry tyrant".

Swanpride Since: Jun, 2013
#53716: Mar 22nd 2016 at 6:58:32 AM

[up] So far, nothing about his motivation has been established. We only know that he wants the infinity stones, that he destroyed a number of worlds beforehand and that he likes to raise children to be his devoted soldiers. Basically we know a lot about his plans, but nothing about his reasons. He is pretty much a blank slate in this regard.

[up]Which is why I went with that assumption. Let's hope the movie fleshes him out.

Thanos hasn't really done anything interesting whatsoever, so hopefully his next appearance actually amounts to something. Even Feige said they want to make sure Thanos' next appearance is impressive, because audiences aren't gonna take him seriously if all he does is sit in a chair and say ominous things.

Just had a hilarious thought of Thanos doing just that while taking on the Avengers and the Guardians.

While I liked Thanos' talk with Ronan, that's not the same as Thanos impressing as a villain. I really hope whenever he shows up next before Infinity War, it's him doing something.

I had understood that possibly the no-daughter of Loki (Hela) and death would be the same character.

If we assume that she appear as Hela in Thor, this would eliminate any ambiguity about her existence.

There was never any confirmation of that, just a theory, albeit a fairly likely one if Ragnarok does indeed lead into Infinity War.

Don't forget that he left the chair!!! That was important!

But seriously, I reserve judgement on Thanos until he is actually more than just a teaser.
