Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The Russos posted a snippet of Civil War on their Facebook. Can't make out what Ross is really saying though.

It's more or less the same text he has in the trailer. The interesting part is who else is in this scene aside from Cap, Falcon and Scarlett Witch.

I'd like Vision and War Machine to say "Hey we were only there for that last one."

You can also make out a brief mention of Thor and Banner.

  • STARK: Well, if you want to get technical, we're talking about the Battle for New York, the Washington D.C. incident, and Sokovia. Only one person in this room was actually present for all of those.
  • ROGERS: Yeah, but it's my movie, so I'd be careful about throwing blame around if I were you.

From that diversity article: She says she's surprised that more isn't made out of the fact that she's the only modern female Asian-American superhero in TV or movies.

I get the sentiment, but damn, that comes across as super bitchy. I'm pretty sure the writer of the article is more to blame than Bennet, though. Still... it's not true. I mean, we've got Psylocke and Jubilee in the upcoming X-Men movie, Melinda May in the same damn show (or does she not count because she doesn't have powers?), Katana from both Arrow and Suicide Squad, Yukio from The Wolverine.

Not saying Asians aren't horribly underrepresented, but I just don't appreciate the hyperbole used.

X-Men: Apocalypse hasn't come out yet, Melinda May is a spy not a superhero, and neither Katana nor Yukio are superheroes either (at least, not in the movies/TV shows - in the comics, Katana is a superhero, but in Suicide Squad and Arrow she's not).

Black Widow is a superhero, since she's part of a superhero team.

Melinda May, however, is not.

Yeah, being a member of the Avengers automatically makes you a superhero. Being a member of SHIELD makes you a spy. Being a member of a team and SHIELD makes you a superspy. Spyhero? Superspyhero?

Superspy, probably. It sounds better.

And, yeah, I was wondering about what makes someone a superhero in the MCU. So I guess, if you have superpowers (via serum or supersuit or alien ancestry) and use them for good, you're a superhero, but if you're a Badass Normal, you're a superhero if you're on a superhero team. Is that right?

When we're done, there won't be anything left.

You are also a superhero if you:
a) fight crime
b) fight supervillains (as a living, not just during secret spy missions)
c) call yourself by a cool codename

Melinda May does none of those, except for a little bit of fighting supervillains when they are in her way during a spy mission. (Okay, she has a cool codename, but she hates it and never wants anyone who call her it.)

So until Ultron, Rhodey and Falcon were not superheroes?

And aren't Skye and Melinda both technically SHIELD agents? Seems weird one would be a superhero and the other wouldn't.

Falcon already had his nickname in Winter Soldier (Hill clearly calls him Falcon at one point), and Rhodey hates the Iron Patriot name and still refers to himself as War Machine (just look at his password).

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

[up][up][up] They have super suits, which count as having powers, kind of. So I'd say they always were superheroes.

Uh, no, she didn't. She did spy missions against Hydra. That's not crime fighting.

That same criteria discounts Skye herself. It discounts a lot of superheroines from the comics as well.

Also, there's no way Katana isn't a superhero in Arrow. Making it a criteria of doing it enough times, in very specific ways, and so on feels like Moving the Goalposts.

What exactly counts as fighting crime, anyway? I mean, you could technically argue that going on spy missions against Hydra counts as fighting crime. I'm kinda confused on where the line is drawn.
