Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I dont know, If you freeze the video you could see Tony shock with bucky atack, he was trying to kill him, so between cap defending a derenge killer and shooting rhodes out of the sky....

Also I think it was vision who shoot rhodes, maybe under scarlet witch hex?

So looking at it the death count for New York, Washington, and Sokovia was 284.

Finally, they let him show up in a trailer! Not sure about this costume though. A bit too... bright, maybe?

[up][up]I can believe it for all of them but New York. Way more people must've died there.

The chaos during the Battle for New York was confined to a few city blocks surrounding Stark Tower. I'd actually have expected Sokovia to have a much higher death toll despite the Avengers' best efforts. It was a much larger area being assaulted by murderbots, while the Avengers' ability to be everywhere was constantly undermined by being clumped in groups of 3-5.

Musing on this further, the Chitauri Invasion was a battle of subjugation, not extermination. They were using shock and awe tactics, making grand shows of force by blowing up empty cars and shit to intimidate the humans into submission, and they were taking prisoners. We see them corralling civilians into a bank. They might have been given an extermination order after they finished seizing the city but for the time being, they were actually making the effort to not just kill everyone.

They were shooting for the "enemy surrenders" victory condition over the "complete annihilation" one, which makes sense because the latter is really hard. Most battles are won in the former way.

Well, at least one woman died because the Hulk-debris fell on her....

I actually have a harder time believing that there weren't more causalities in Washington, considering Hydra killed their fellow agents left and right, but perhaps they were only counting civilian causalities....

Btw, around the 20th time I watched the trailer I got used to the Spider-man costume.

Spidey looks like ass. Also he's not Andrew Garfield. Things not looking up on the arachnid front.

I wouldn't have minded Garfield coming back again, but I'm not upset about it because the horrible way his character was written in ASM means I can't really see him as a definitive Spider-Man or anything.

We see them corralling civilians into a bank.

They were also about to set off a bomb in that bank. Maybe they were corralling them so it'd be easier to kill them all at once.

Also new trailer is great.

Huh? How do we know that? Do you mean that lady's parents on Jessica Jones? Because I think she said that her parents died due to the invasion, not from Hulk debris.

Nah, no one dies when Hulk rampages. Cuz he's constantly doing advanced math in his head so he can determine debris trajectory. tongue

I like Spider-Man's look, though the eyes might take some getting used to.

Also, are we sure Rhodey's not gonna die? Because he looked pretty dead in that trailer.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
