Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

This made me smile.

Talking to IGN about The Falcon being a member of The Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, actor Anthony Mackie revealed that he was just as surprised as everyone else when he was revealed to be a member of the New Avengers at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron. "They never send you the whole script. Like when they asked me to do [Age of Ultron], they sent me two scenes. There are two hours and seven minutes around those two scenes, but I never got to read it. When we were at the premiere I was like “Cool.” I'm with my son and he gets to see his daddy in two scenes in The Avengers. By the end of the movie I turn around and they're like “Avengers Assemble!” I'm like, “Holy s**t! I’m an Avenger!!” So I turn around to everybody with me and they were like, “Dude! You're a f**kin' Avenger!” “This is f**kin' amazing.” So, that's the story of my Marvel life."

Asked if he really had no idea that he had been chosen to become an Avenger, Mackie added: "I had no idea. I flew in, Chris and Scarlett are up top and the rest of us are standing there. It was like “Cut. Anthony fly in. Action. Hm-hm-hm. Cut. Alright, thanks!” That was pretty much it. Six months later you go to a premiere and you s**t yourself. Everybody was like “Why are you so excited?” I'm like, “Arrhhhahhh... I just found out I'm an Avenger!”

I'm reminded of that Dorkly skit where it's pointed out that Daredevil, given his sonar ability, should really be called Batman and Ghost Rider, given that he's an actual daredevil with a connection to the Devil, should be called Daredevil.

They're definitely not going to use her, but I don't think the reason is because they're afraid of stepping on DC's toes. When it comes to film, Marvel's the reigning champion. They already declared a game of chicken by releasing Civil War on the same day Dawn of Justice, two very similar premises, was to come out. DC blinked and moved back their own release date. Marvel knows that any movie they make is going to be a resounding success; they have nothing to fear from comparison.

The reason they're probably never going to use Felicia as the love interest in a film is that, much as I love the character, Marvel's just not interested in pushing her in that role. They haven't been for a very long time. Adaptations like the Ultimate Spider-Man comics or the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon tend to pay lip service to it before irrefutably sinking the ship. The Web of Shadows video game actually locks you into the Evil ending if you don't uncharacteristically abandon her to die. Even the idea of introducing her in ASM looked like she was going to be a villain - which she actually was in the ASM 2 video game adaptation.

Marvel's not withholding her for fear that they can't compete with Dark Knight Rises or Batman Returns. They're withholding her because they've been trying to kill the notion of Felicia as a serious love interest for years.

Yeah I don't think Marvel really cares about being seen as copycats (heh) because they've been top dog for a while. The two characters are much more similar to each other than Iron Man or Batman, but it doesn't really matter that much.

Even if they want to use her, there is no reason to introduce her in the very first Spider-man movie. (And I still hope that this one will have no love interest at all...)

Love interests have typically been pretty important for Spider-Man's character but I do admit it would be both refreshing and surprising for there not to be one to start with.

I just want a definitive adaptation of the character, or at least one that I can definitely get behind.

I want her in the MCU because it would probably mean the comic version would stop trying to pretend to be a mob boss only Black Cat turned evil for awful reasons and is still a mob boss despite the fans and critics being tired of it.

Selina fits way better in the role and she doesn't actually turn evil.

Question: Do we want the Spider-Man villain to be established before the movie(he's already a super villain/mob boss/mythological being killing animal themed heroes and villains/etc) or get his powers/suit/motive in the movie?

I don't particularly mind. The former would be fresher, but as long as the second is done well it shouldn't matter too much.

Just as long as it's an actual fresh take and not just rehashing stuff we've already seen.

Depends on the villain. IE I would love to see Norman Osborn for at least two movies before he turns into the green goblin. But I would be perfectly fine with other villains just turning up.

It depends on the plot. Either can work but which is better depends on how well it can be tied to the central narrative. Remember the lessons of Winter Soldier.

It would be a cool thing for Spider-Man to already have some part of his rogues gallery already in existence - it would save them the issue of having to introduce everyone going forward, and would add a lot to a part of the universe that is going to have difficulty getting its niche going forward. They don't have to have them all appear onscreen or anything, but, say, have old issues of the Bugle be shown with headlines like "SPIDER-MAN: THREAT OR MENACE?", "SPIDER-MAN AND DOC OCK: EIGHT-ARMED ALLIES?" or "SPIDER-MAN HELPS ELECTRIC CRIMINAL ROB BANK!" Or if we have a bit where people talk about Spidey, have someone mention he once saved them from a dinosaur man (for added fun, have the person clearly be Connors himself) and not be believed. Stuff like that.

I'd love a vibe like Earth's Mightiest Heroes did for Spidey in general, where he's been active for some time but nobody's been really paying attention to him. Another cool thing would be to establish that the Green Goblin exists, while having Normal Osborn be a supporting character, and have no one realize yet that the two are the same person.

[up]i agree.

@Lordof Lore if Felicia were to appear in the MCU wouldn't Marvel just use the current crime boss version? Especially given how committed they are to it?

Not necessarily. The movies do draw from some of the more recent comics, but not always. For all the (justified) talk about Marvel being obsessed with synergy, their comic line does differ from the MCU in a lot of key ways.

Adaptations tend to still work with older material if they can. Most of DC's adaptations these days are fusions of the characters' recent things and their older, more iconic appearances.

Marvel is mixed in that regard too. A lot of their stuff is influenced by the classics but we've seen a lot of influence from the more recent material (Maria Hill, Hawkeye's SHIELD costume and having a family, Nick Fury being a black man, the fact that we're doing a Civil War movie at all, and Carol Danvers being Captain Marvel not Ms. Marvel).

Well, that is the advantage of having so much lore to draw from. You can pick whatever you like or whatever resonated the best with the readers. And with lesser known characters, you can throw in some changes. IE the only thing left of Peter Quill's backstory is that he is half-alien. More or less everything else has been twisted a little bit, making him a way more sympathetic character in the process. With Scott Lang it is the other way around. Instead of telling the story of a "noble robber" who only wants to rescue his child, we now have the story of someone who is prone to misuse his abilities and follow the "easy way" instead of going the hard way.

Markus admitted he was behind on the show, “I have to confess, having come here, I've seen no TV since I got here in April. I haven't seen the vast majority of this season of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ There's fish oil?”

Mc Feely was just as lost. “Is there really fish oil? What are you talking about?”

Aww. Looks like JK as JJJ isn't happening. I'm sure he'll do well as Gordon, but it's hard to see him as such at this moment. I'm just too used to him playing hammy types.

They're also looking for a racially diverse supporting cast for the Spider-Man movie. Only makes sense considering it's set in Queens.
