Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I mean, I understand why they couldn't - the film was shot last year and written even before that, before AOS had started airing its third season. And the film is going to air when the third season is almost over, so they might not know at all what's going on with AOS when the film happens.
But a small tiny nod wouldn't be hard to do, I think. Something that just is like, "Man, there are a lot more superhumans coming out of the woodwork these days."
Looks to be a new character created for the MCU. Peter had a sorta girlfriend called Michele in the comics but that's pretty much it and I don't think it's her.
We're probably going to get Gwen as Peter's girlfriend again in the MCU since Marvel are already promoting her big time in the comics as a result of Spider-Verse and TASM 1 and 2. We're more likely to get Black Cat(please for the love of god Slott, stop pushing her as a big time mob boss and super villain it hasn't worked at all!) than we're to get MJ.

I don't think the casual audience cares enough about Catwoman to make that accusation. She's only been in a thirty-year-old film that was largely forgettable, the shittiest film in the Dark Knight Trilogy, and a god-awful standalone movie that everyone's trying to repress. She doesn't exactly have a hardcore fanbase among filmgoers.
EDIT: Also, two out of three of those appearances gave her ridiculous cat-magic superpowers that would set her apart from a simple cat burglar.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Well, no, but they know who she is.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. It's a shame that to novice eyes Black cat and Catwoman look like rip offs of each other. They actually both started as very independent (female cat themed) characters. But then Catwoman took from black cat the Dating Catwomman thing, and black cat took from Catwoman the Cat Burgular thing and they converged.
Yes, but that alone wouldn't weaken her popularity.
Like, plenty of people noticed the parallels between Iron Man and Batman, but the general consensus was that Iron Man did a lot of the things Batman did in his movie, but he did them better. The internet was abuzz with talk of how Iron Man is Batman done right.
DareDevil has seen similar praise. "Batman take note: this is how you do vigilante super action!"
Green Lantern's been criticized for being a shittier Iron Man but that's because his movie was not only clearly trying to ape Iron Man's success but also doing a terrible job of it. Quality counts for a lot and I don't think Catwoman's film appearances have proven to be a terribly hard act for Felicia to follow.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. That's irrelevant. The point isn't that she's popular, it's that she's a character who everyone on the planet recognizes with the exact same theme and dynamic as Black Cat.
Which is moot anyway since it doesn't look like Black Cat will be in this one either, just like she hasn't been in any of them (save for a glorified civilian cameo in ASM 2). I'm sure if Daredevil dressed up in a Bat costume and a cape people would be labeling that a knockoff too.

And they would be applauding it.
Felicia's similarity to Catwoman would give DC fans fuel for criticism, but for critics and filmgoers, I expect the only thing that would result would be articles and reviews popping up on Rotten Tomatoes going, "Spider-Man's Catwoman blows Dark Knight Rises out of the water!" and "DC take notes: this is how you do Catwoman!"
Nothing is original in art. So far as reception is concerned, how you do matters more than what you do.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Oh, I am certainly the events in Ao S will be relevant for the Civil War, but it will be one of the side-battlefields. There is a difference between the process of making the movies and the show and what is later on screen. In this case, the show has to write around the movies, not the other way around. But that doesn't mean that id doesn't provide additional background to what will happen.

Yes! For a while there I was a little worried about that.
<wince> I feel sorry for AOS at this point. This film was the last real chance for the situation in AOS to impact the universe as a whole, especially if the Inhumans movie is outright ignoring AOS' Inhumans arc as well.
