Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

@Bleakness in 616 and Earth-0: I'd actually say both worlds are the happiest they've been in a decade. Sure mutants are still hunted and the inhumans are now as hated as them, superheroes still fight each other and we're getting close to a new Civil War of all things, Black Cat is the worst evil mob boss ever and Thanos looks to be showing up on Earth once every year etc but at least most of the books are happy. Sure Bruce has to go back to being Batman, the Joker is coming back after a while gone, Darkseid showed up on Earth, Gotham is still probably the worst city in the US to live in if you're wealthy etc but most of the books are happy or hopeful. Books like Gotham Academy, Ms. Marvel, Starfire and more shows that the world can be a happy place.

@Blade: Around the time Snipes went to Marvel and told them he'd be up for more Blade movies(R or PG)Marvel announced a new Blade book with Blade's never before seen daughter taking up the name and having Buffy-esque adventures(the book is still not out).

[up][up]At least the Marvel comics 'verse feels more cohesive than DC's, which is literally a bunch of other companies cobbled together so several of the character groups have to live on separate Earths because they're so disparate grin

I wonder if the reason the MCU is designated Earth-199999 by Marvel(main comic world is 616 and the Ultimate universe they killed off due to massive mismanagement among other things was 1610) is because they want to do a invasion or something from Earth-200000(which has never been used) later.

Like the comics, the universe designation was probably completely arbitrary. The MCU is part of the Multiverse in theory but in practice they've done nothing with the concept.

I genuinely hope that Daredevil will not fight with more of 3 members at the same time.

  • I think that should be limited to 3, to prove they are strong enemies.

Blade and Daughter is exactly the kind of content I want added to the MCU. It would probably work best as a Netflix series, but if Snipes is still possibly attached, that might suggest a film franchise. It's not obvious how much Snipes costs after prison.

I'm happily anticipating the day that MCU hasn't got much live action stuff going on anymore, and it primarily exists in the comics medium, because then we can have crazy stuff like a 616 crossover.

...that would be weird. I mean, the MCU exists for movies and television primarily. The only comics set in the MCU are one-offs meant to tie into the movies. If you are just having the entire MCU primarily exist in comics, then why not just go with the 616 universe?

Because the MCU has a lot of fans. And historically, popular superhero TV shows tend to continue as comics after their live action platform ends, because comics are a lot cheaper to make than live action media, so if your audience can no longer support films and TV they will be able to support a comics line for a while.

Smallville is probably the best example.

Even if it doesn't get a comics era, if the MCU goes dead I still anticipate a 616 crossover over comics series, because it's a great way to retain fans and introduce them to the 616.

He pretty much has to. Iron Fist's supporting character gallery in New York is really tiny if you don't pull on characters from Jessica Jones or Luke Cage.

I really hope Misty Knight shows up from Luke Cage so we can get something like this in like 10 years. Them loving each other has been a thing for years.

EDIT——

Whoops, misread the "from" as "in" and didn't realize you already knew Misty Knight was in Luke Cage.

It's part of Secret Wars: Secret Love. It's called Misty and Danny Forever. Writer was Jeremy Whitley and the art was done by Gurihiru.

It apparently takes place in another reality, according to the wiki.

And the cover is pretty amusing.

So I just had a thought: what if they make a sequel to Doctor Strange, and it has Mephisto as the villain? Then they could bring in Ghost Rider (either Johnny Blaze or Danny Ketch, whichever one they wanna use) as someone who has their own personal reasons for going after Mephisto, and he teams up with Strange so that they can both stop him.

I didn't know he looked so much like Bruce Lee. The only photo I saw of Shang-Chi was the one on Wikipedia.
