Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up][up][up]I didn't even get the point of the article since Marvel has been aligning many elements of their universe with the movies for a while now.

Which is weird, since Marvel has been doing it since forever and even now, they are getting better sales than they were five years ago.

Hoo boy, Wanda looks really awkward in that group shot. Also what do they have against showing Sharon and Wanda in the same image together? Is there a Smurfette quota or something?

[up][up]I'm guessing Sharon really does not have that big a role in the conflict and for whatever reason they were putting her on the early promo stuff just so Team Cap wouldn't have zero women.

Nah, I can see why. It's been going on since forever but people seem to be annoyed about how broad the scope of it has gotten since the MCU began. Some changes I can see the reasoning behind but some of the things they've messed with to make it closer to the MCU has been kind of silly (Did we really need a stupid excuse for them to start calling Quake "Skye?")

[up][up]

That doesn't explain why Scarlet Witch wasn't in the early promo stuff.

My guess is that they don't want to make the promo art lopsided in Team Cap's favor, so they keep swapping out Sharon and Scarlet Witch.

Along that line though, I do wonder if part of the reason Black Widow ended up placed on Iron Man's side was partly so there would be at least one prominent female member on Team Iron Man. I'm not complaining of course, since there's a lot of interesting story potential for Captain America to have to fight against one of his closest allies from his last solo film.

It was just a small nod which they don't even really use anymore because Skye is calling herself Daisy now.

That doesn't explain why Scarlet Witch wasn't in the early promo stuff.

Promo stuff tends to get put together very early so it's possible there were script changes between now and then. Or maybe even licensing stuff that's since been sorted.

Doing it to keep Cap's team from looking lopsided really doesn't work when Wanda is seen fighting alongside Cap in both of the trailers we've seen now, so it's not like it was a surprise they were saving.

I guess in a lot of shots it would cause an imbalance to add her. Plus, some marketing guy obviously feels that the two females on Caps side are the least interesting characters, so you never see more than one of them in one shot.

That's actually great.

Hawkeye is at least slightly more competent than Ron, but I'll let that slide.

Clint just needs to disappear and(totally not Hawkeye in a new suit)Ronin to take his place.

(They'll probably save Echo/the first Ronin for Daredevil S4 or something)

[up][up][up][up] They do both have the same unfortunate Memetic Loser status though.

[up][up]Clearly Clint needs to learn monkey kung-fu.

Plus, some marketing guy obviously feels that the two females on Caps side are the least interesting characters, so you never see more than one of them in one shot.

That's because they might not even be together in the same shot. We don't even know if Sharon is present at the big airport fight or any of the other Team Cap stuff.

edvedd3rd, Are you aware that Ron is indeed the strongest character in the series?

I just hope that Daredevil and Ronin are just friends.

A hero doesn't need three love interests (karen and Elektra are enough).

To nobody's surprise, still no R-rated MCU films anytime soon.

Which I'm fine with tbh.

Does Marvel Studios even have the rights to any characters that would necessitate an R-Rated film? Aside from Punisher and maybe Moon Knight, of course.

Blade, the character that pretty much launched the superhero genre in terms of Marvel properties.

[up][up]Both which would work better in a series format. Possibly miniseries, like eight episodes instead of thirteen.

All the R-rated heroes in Marvel Studios' stable I can think of are better suited to other mediums than film. Only way I can see their films becoming R-rated is because they intentionally bump up the swearing, gore, and sex, and I'm totally fine without that.
