Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

It also looks a lot less silly than the Uncanny Avengers cleavage-baring leather coat-dress I'm guessing it's adapted from.

I hope Thor (clone) is a playable character.

Also, does Scott have a sister? Because she could put on the same suit and be known to Scott's daughter as Aunt-Man.

"The announcement that Carol will also be the MCU's most powerful superhero. Basically, she'll be Marvel's answer to Superman!"

I think the final battle will be Thanos vs Captain Marvel, with the other heroes as cheerleaders.

The truth don't like the fact that a only member is much stronger than the other members.

I think Captain Marvel should have the same level of Thor, but not stronger.

I wish they'd do a better job of putting eye liner on Olson. She's got deep set eyes, you can't just put a thick even border around them, you'll make her eyes look small and shrunken! You need to wing the eyeliner to make her eyes seem longer and brought forward, with some highlighting on the nose side lid to make them pop.

Like, Hollywood should know how to put eyeliner on a different kind of face.

[up][up][up]

Because her powers are based on energy absorption, perhaps there can be a diminishing returns effect in place. That way in typical circumstances she can be roughly on par with Thor, but needs access to enormous amounts of energy in order to go far beyond that.

The only source of power that could make her comparable to all the other Avengers combined in this scenario would be the Infinity Stones themselves.

Carol's limitations can be her personality then. Maybe she's got the most raw power, but she's too brash and Strong, but Unskilled. Or like Falrinn said there's outside limitations to how powerful she can be.

If she's going to be that strong, they may be drawing some inspiration from her Binary power set

The truth don't like the fact that a only member is much stronger than the other members.

I'm not sure what this means. There's nothing to indicate Captain Marvel will be the strongest hero in the MCU, but even if she was, there's already Avengers who are more powerful than their teammates. I'm not sure what the big deal is.

Regardless, I would not be surprised if Carol is weaker than her comic counterpart anyway. A large number of the MCU characters have been greatly toned down from their comic incarnations.

Actually, that's pretty much true in the comics. In one issue of The Ultimates, she has Blue Marvel shoot her with enough energy so that she can "go Binary," which was her name when she had the power of a binary star.

CAROL DANVERS, THE HEROINE WITH EXACTLY AS MUCH POWER AS TWO STARS!

Actually, the binary powers were even more ridiculous.

As Binary, the character could tap the energy of a "white hole", allowing full control and manipulation of stellar energies, and therefore control over heat, the electromagnetic spectrum and gravity. Light speed travel and the ability to survive in the vacuum of space were also possible.

Also it made her hair and skin catch on fire, apparently.

Isn't the whole point of the Avengers that no matter how powerful some of the members are, they need help to win against the bad guys? United we stand, divided we fall?

I do remember seeing a quote somewhere saying that Carol would be the most powerful person in the MCU and would basically be the MCU's response to Superman, though I can't for the life of me recall where I read that. But, anyway, Carol being the most powerful hero in the MCU doesn't necessarily mean that she'd be more powerful than the rest of the Avengers combined. So that's not really an issue, I don't think.

When we're done, there won't be anything left.

Carol has been strong in the comics before without going Binary but usually she needs a nuke exploding in her face to do it(One of the 616 Superman expies needed a nuke powered Carol to slow down for a second with a punch).

Funny enough in the comics Thor vs Superman would be a close fight but in terms of MCU vs DCEU Thor vs Superman would be a total stomp due to the MCU's much lower power.

I think MCU!Carol will be a spaceship buster but I don't think she'll be that much more powerful than Thor is right now. Flying in space and energy blasts is what I'm guessing her focus will be instead of "I can lift a helicarrier!". If Nova got added to the universe his focus would be pretty much the same but with him being much faster and the usual Nova powers(did you know he can pretty much open warp gates?).

Edit: In other news Selvig got added to the comics today.

Selvig got added to the comics a few weeks ago.

[up][up] The actual quote was "one of the most, if not the most, powerful heroes in the MCU." So it sounds like there's wiggle room.

Power in one scenario isn't power in another. Vision's phasing ability makes him functionally undefeatable. AND he has the mobility and range associated with being able to fly and shoot friggin lasers, but he's not too good at dealing with large numbers; Scarlet Witch on the other hand excels in mosh fights because she can just vaporize everything around her.

In terms of raw strength and indestructibility Carol can be pretty high, but to make her the most powerful of the Avengers she needs to have major destructive output.

They probably shouldn't have done the white outlines on the characters in that pic. It makes the editing pretty glaring.

Yep.

With all the build-up the Power Gem had in Guardians, I would be thrilled if Infinity War featured a scene where Carol grasps the Power Gem and uses her powerset to absorb its immense output to temporarily become the Power Gem.
