Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I don't really see the similarity between Maleficent and Jafar. Maleficent's literally Satan who seeks to bring suffering and death to the world, and primarily operates via grand magical acts, while Jafar is just a very power-hungry politician who primarily operates through cunning and trickery.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."
Pay attention to the design. The way he plays with the staff is taken straight from Maleficent. A lot of his movements are. She turns into a Dragon at the end of the movie. He turns into a Snake. The big difference is that Maleficent is the Mistress of all Evil and he is just a faceblind wannabe who manages to defeat himself.

Recycling animation was definitely a thing that Disney did because money.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersJafar's outfit is a throwback to Maleficent, and he also goes One-Winged Angel, but that's all rather superficial given that everything narratively important about him is completely different: the nature of his scheme, the way he moves the plot along, his personality and role, etc.
You could call Yzma a knockoff of Maleficent by that standard.

Yeah. I rewatched Aladdin some years back and something that really stood out to me is how subtle Jafar's limited supernatural abilities really are. Like, he can do some fortunetelling and he has a neat staff with hypnotic effects - effects that the Sultan actually snaps himself out of at one point, even. Apart from that, he's just a harmless old man.
As a kid, I imagined him as this powerful and dangerous sorcerer, but that's only the case in the climax. He's really just treacherous politician.
Funny you mention her, as I actually consider Yzma an exploration of Jafar. She's basically, "What if Jafar got fired for some bullshit reason before he could put his scheme into motion?"

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.![]()
I agree with that about Yzma. She's in a lot of ways a parody of Jafar, or maybe characters like Ludmilla who really are copies of the character type.

I really enjoy Yzma as a villain. I honestly think she's one of the consistently funniest Disney villains.
But I noticed we're a bit off-topic now, so I guess i'll ask a question.
What movie from Phase 3 (besides Civil War) are you most excited for?
For me it's probably Black Panther and GOTG 2. I want Doctor Strange to be excellent, but I'm not sure about anything beyond Cumberbatch's acting ability.
Civil War, Dr. Strange, and Captain Marvel.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I'm looking foward to Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, MCU!Spider-Man (I barely watched any of the last 5 movies note ), and GOTG Vol. 2.
I think the MCU's best bet for a big villain in Avengers after Thanos, besides the Masters of Evil (provided they don't appear during the plot with Thanos), is to have a villain set up in Dr. Strange's series invade our reality - especially since there aren't very many other ways to get Strange and the Avengers to team up.
I mean, the Avengers in an action/horror battle vs an Eldritch Abomination like Shuma Gorath? Sounds awesome.

All of which are hilarious. Gaston didn't become a fountain of memes for nothing.
