Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Did anyone get the feeling the "him" Claire was talking about might not be Matt but the Punisher?

Also, how would Daredevil be solely responsible for Punisher when there are people running around the MCU using violence?

So far Daredevil is the only vigilante.

[up][up]Most of the other heroes in the MCU aren't vigilantes in the traditional sense. The Avengers aren't going around beating up muggers and drug dealers.

And even if Spider-Man is running around at this point in MCU time, dealing with the Punisher isn't really his thing.

The other thing is that in a drastic change from the comics, most of the movies actually take place outside of New York City. This isn't like in the books where there's thousands of costumed vigilantes all living in one city.

If there's a new vigilante sprouting up in New York after Daredevil then it's fairly reasonable to assume that he was inspired by him.

Rumor (and it must be stressed that's all it is at this point) is that Finn Jones might play Iron Fist.

He's not terrible by any means, but even completely ignoring the whole discussion over whether Race Lift or not, I remember his acting on Game of Thrones being really uneven so I hope it's not true.

Well, I hope that rumor shrivels and dies within the next few days.

Acting aside, I expect them to cast someone with some material arts abilities.

Oh god, not him. I dreaded each scene of the show with him.

Oh shit.

Looks like Entertainment Weekly just confirmed it.

Boy, it's a good thing they went with an unusual actor who nobody could have predicted would be cast for the role rather than picking someone obvious like Benedict Cumberbatch, huh? Aren't you guys excited to see whether or not he can pull it off?

Er, he looks like the exact obvious choice I'd go for if I were shooting for a comic style Iron Fist.

That's kinda why people are annoyed.

Don't know what I'm looking forward to more, the series itself or folks desperately bending over backwards to justify this.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Never heard of Finn, but that's because I don't watch Game of Thrones.

Well Jones has the looks part down, it's his spotty record in acting competence that disappoints me the most and makes me consider him as a miscast. Whereas most people don't dispute Cumberbatch's ability to act.

[up][up][up] I don't dislike Selvig, but it's for the better that he's gone.

As long as this means they're toning down the forced goofiness from The Dark World then I'm fine.

That I don't disagree with. Fitting or not, some of the jokes made me smile, which is a stronger emotion than most of the rest of the film was able to muster. It's still a crutch and hopefully Ragnarok is strong enough that it won't need the jokes.
