Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Man, I tried watching some of the earlier movies last night and I can't. I can't stop noticing problems with how Avengers is structured(also I laughted when I reached Coulson's death scene since I now know that the movie almost got a R rating due to it being too violent before it got edited), how Cap 1 falls in quality so quickly or how IM 2 just feels wrong.

Avengers made a big deal about Coulson dying, and I was just sitting there wondering who this guy was and why I should care.

The movie is just less than the sum of its parts when only two of the movies that built up to it were actually good.

Also, seriously people the "Hawkeye is lame" meme is getting as old as the "Aquaman is lame" one. In a world where Batman is taken seriously, I believe a thief turned spy who is an expert martial artist and archer should be given a bit more respect. I don't see Black W Idow getting this crap.

I think part of it might just be people don't find Hawkeye that interesting. I certainly didn't, though the fact that he has a family and stuff in Age of Ultron so that might have improved his character somewhat.

Barton should switch to Ronin if he survives IW.

I am just in the process of rewatching the MCU (in fact, I am nearly done, only a few episodes of Agents of SHIELD left). I enjoy movies which I originally didn't like that much more now, because seeing how everything connects with each other gives certain scenes just so much more meaning.

I wasn't aware Giant-Man was spoiled anywhere.

Wait, you all missed me and comicwriter posting LEGO sets and everything else? We've talked about him before and we even brought up Hawkeye's time as a giant in the comics as a joke. It's been months!

[up] I deliberately avoid Lego sets because I don't want to be spoiled by the merch. *sigh* Obviously being so cautious was for nothing.

How about putting the info under spoiler tags, where it belonged from the get go?

[up][up]I edited it, but honestly, like lordeoflore said, eh I could have sworn this was all discussed months ago when the initial info was first leaked.

I definitely know I've seen references to the character since then, so I just assumed everyone had known by now.

You know what they say about assumptions. Assume and make an ass out of u.

Spoilertags are mandatory when discussing leaked details of Works that haven't been released yet. There's some debate as to when the appropriate expiration date for mandatory spoiler tags is, but all sides of the debate agree that the answer is absolutely not "Any time prior to the Work hitting distribution".

This is all extremely hilarious, because when I was saying that we still don't know how Captain America: Civil War will begin, somebody was all, "Yes, we do because SPOOOOOILERS" only the spoilers weren't spoiler-tagged.

I think AOU did a much better job handling him than the first one did but it also sort of hammered home how outclassed he is by superpowered characters at the same time. His major strength in the movie was as The Heart of the team, I thought.

It doesn't help that Marvel is increasingly crowding the universe with more and more superpowered heroes, which only illustrates the problem even more. I hope Civil War at least gives him some cool feats.
