Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Pepper suddenly displaying martial arts prowess after being a non-action girl up until then was a bit out of left field, yeah. I assumed Extremis just made you regenerative, strong, and hot, not automatically able to do flips and leaps and all that. Not necessarily bad to see her kicking ass, but I'd have preferred she verbally or intellectually humiliate Killian than just physically explode him.
He's a man of intellect first and action second, so it would have been more satisfying to outwit him rather than outmatch him. That's why I like how Stark unexpectedly blows him up with the faulty Mark 42 rather than just overpower him by kicking a tank missile into his chest like Pepper does.
But eh, I still like the movie, and I still like Stark, Pepper, and Killian anyway.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!I can totally get behind Rescue Pepper and, in fact, would say that this development has been overdue since Iron Man 3.
- TONY: I can't bear it if anything happens to you so I'm building tons of suits. Like, so many suits. You have no idea how many suits I've built.
- PEPPER: Oh cool. Did you build me one?
- TONY: What? No, you don't get it. I'M supposed to be protecting YOU.
- PEPPER: Yes, and you can do that by having at least one of your obsession suits be something I'm supposed to wear. So I can protect myself in an emergency.
- TONY: But if you're wearing a suit, how can I protect you? You're already protected.
- PEPPER: Oh god, this is an alpha male thing, isn't it?
Suit with giant chest laser? Check. Suit that breaks into pieces and punches people, dismembering the wearer in the process? Check. Tiny Hulkbuster prototype? Check. Suit for Pepper? What are you, nuts?

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Judging by how he used it during Operation: Blow Up Tony's House, I assume that Model 42 WAS supposed to be for her, once he ironed out all the kinks with it being terrible.
But yeah, Pepper could should have been served better in that movie

Forever liveblogging the AvengersYou could have replaced Pepper with an actual rabbit and barely changed the script.
My various fanfics. And in Iron Man 2. It amuses me how Vanko's last gambit would've amounted to no tension at all if Pepper hadn't been near one of the crashed drones.
Vanko: "You lose." (activates bombs with beeping timer and flashing lights)
Tony: "Uh, no." (flies away)

He had no way of knowing that, too. He seemed to just be counting on his self-destruct killing Tony.
"You lose" was a ragequit.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Right? A remote detonator might have given his ragequit at least some punch.
As it was, he just comes off like that explosion hit him harder than everyone thought, and he's deliriously gloating to the elephant man after winning their game of checkers.
- VANKO: You lose.
- STARK: I can fly. Even for you, this is pathetic. C'mon, Rhodey, let's go. (flies away)
- VANKO: Shall we play Parchee— (boom)

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Since we were talking about Rescue/Pepper in armor, I went looking for some comedic fan art by Stjepan Sejic(author of best seller Sunstone) that I remember seeing around that time. Found it.
◊
Sejic is probably best known in the Marvel community for his Inhumans covers during the Cosmic era:
But he has also done a bunch of funny pictures and fan comics and just normal fan art(he mostly does DC art since he's a big shipper of Harley/Ivy and good friends with a bunch of the artists and writers there):

I'm not a huge fan of his art, just because every single woman he draws has the face/personality of Power Girl. Every single one is smirky and snarky, whether it fits their character or not.
My various fanfics.
If Bruce Banner or the Hulk actually shows up, even for just one scene or something, it'll probably be the only reason I would be excited about watching Civil War. 2017 is so far away... TT_TT
Jumping back a few pages to the unusual casting issue, I don't think you can really say one way or another that the concept itself is good or bad, it all depends on the context of the entire production and its end result. I mean, who thought that Michael Keaton would wear the cowl so well?
In regards to Cumberbach specifically, meh. I don't watch a lot of TV, so all I've seen him in is Star Trek Into Darkness, where his casting, even with whitewashing, was not really all that high on the list of issues the movie has.

Also, seriously people the "Hawkeye is lame" meme is getting as old as the "Aquaman is lame" one. In a world where Batman is taken seriously, I believe a thief turned spy who is an expert martial artist and archer should be given a bit more respect. I don't see Black W Idow getting this crap.

I thought everything about how Pepper was used in Iron Man 3 was ridiculous, especially how she was largely Out of Focus with the exception of being used as an emotional and eventually physical MacGuffin for Tony, and then got a minute tops of overblown and completely out of character hyperviolence at the very end of a battle that had already dragged on past the villain's defeat just to make a show of her seeming badass.
Her being characterized as the savvy CEO who prefers to solve things reasonably but can roll out a supersuit when things need to get real would be wonderful, especially in contrast to Tony.
