Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up] I am disappointed by it, but I will give the show a fair shot before judging it. Especially considering how good Ao S has gotten in this last season.

I have questions like why are they on the run, why are they cut off from SHIELD, why would Bobbi be on the run with that reckless idiot.

Actually I can easily see how Lance might get cut off from SHIELD and end up on the run. The question is why Bobbi would follow because she is too valued to be cut off, accused of going rogue, or anything else.

[up]Why do you think Lance is more likely to end up on the run than Bobbi?

Also, there's the question: are they cut off from SHIELD or is SHIELD simply in tatters again?

Also, I'm presuming all of your questions will be answered by the end of AOS Season 3.

Wasn't SHIELD always in tatters?

Considering that SHIELD has a secret team of gifted agents, I wouldn't bet them falling on the side of the accords. They might take the middle ground, officially playing ball while colouring secretly outside the lines.

Plus, I think Shield has currently bigger problems to worry about....

I'm not gonna lie, when I saw that picture that was recently posted, Cumberbatch kinda looks like Doctor Strange. I never thought he was bad for the role, just a typecasted and predictable choice. I hope the movie itself ends up being good.

That was a lot of people's problems with it. It never made sense to me.

"He's too perfect for the role! He would make the best Doctor Strange possibly because you can see it immediately. He has a lot of experience in similar roles and flawlessly looks and sounds the part. Anyone and their dog would immediately cast him."

...this seems like a good reason to cast him, not a bad one.

I'm not against Hunter and Mockingbird getting their own show, I just have no interest in watching it.

I think a lot of people just don't like Cumberbatch/think he's overexposed.

Part of it is, I imagine, that seeing an unorthodox casting with an unexpected actor work out and surprise you can be much more interesting than a safe and predictable choice. I personally really enjoy seeing Playing Against Type. From what I heard, people were tepid about Chris Evans playing Captain America because he was in Fantastic Four, but now a lot of people can't imagine anyone else in the role.

But there's not much reason to assume Cumberbatch will do poorly in the role, just the opposite really.

There's no guarantee the unorthodox choice will work, though. A lot of people had apprehensions about Topher Grace as Eddie Brock too, saying he was too scrawny and whiny and dorky to play the menacing beefcake. And then the movie came out and all the concerns were right on the money; Topher Grace's Eddie Brock was a whiny, dorky idiot who cries to God to smite Peter Parker.

[up][up]Yeah it was nothing against him personally, I'm just sick of seeing him everywhere and he has a very annoying fanbase. Still, he'll probably crush the part.

I think Topher Grace might have done a bit better if there was more for him to work with (Venom himself is kind of an afterthought in the movie), but yes, there is no guarantee the unorthodox choice will work out.

I keep hearing about his annoying fanbase, but every time he's announced for a role, all I see is the Hatedom screaming about how Benedict Cumberbatch is the worst thing since the Holocaust. I'm beginning to suspect that "annoying fanbase" is just code for "girls think he's hot and that bothers me for some reason".

I suspect it's a tumblr thing, because I don't see annoying Cumberbatch fans on this site and I don't use tumblr

Nah. I think a number of the MCU actors are fine as hell. Many of his fans just tend to be very annoying for some reason. I still remember the really annoying behavior when Elementary was announced.

Remember the days before The Winter Soldier premiered when the Clint/Tasha shippers were declaring war because the movie surely would have Widow and Bucky date and now nobody cares.

Nothing makes me laugh harder than Joss Whedon sinking the Clintasha ship with a cannon ball.

I personally felt overexposed to the 'Batch and he didn't fit my perception of what Dr. Strange would look like. Still sort of doesn't even with the beard and mustache.

@Windleopard, He still acts like a mercenary and has been more prone to making reckless, ruthless, and, on occasion, dumb decisions that could easily make him have a falling out with SHIELD or its members because of some harebrained scheme gone wrong. Maybe they won't hate him but it wouldn't surprise me if they might have no choice but to excommunicate him or something.

He didn't really sink it, as much as he replaced its sails with a Friend motor. It's been converted into a tremendously popular Friend Ship with the reveal that Nat and Clint aren't romantically involved, but she's totally an honorary part of the Barton family.

The whole matter with Elementary had more to do with the show itself than Cumberbatch specifically. Plus, the whole thing was a carefully engineered campaign by CBS anyway. They deliberately targeted those people who felt that Sherlock is "not that good" and they got them. Good for them.

With Cumberbatch himself, I don't think that there is anything to worry about. Yes, he is a little bit overexposed, but you can generally trust that he doesn't phone any role in. And he has a lot of experience deal with fandoms, which is a good skill for someone who takes on a giant franchise. I am also sure that Marvel didn't cast him because he is popular, but because he really is a good fit. Considering how much juggling was necessary between this gig and Sherlock, they must have REALLY wanted him.

I really liked that Whedon did that. I've never really perceived Nat and Clint as being romantically involved, but instead really close friends, and I loved that Nat is an honorary aunt to Clint's kids. I just really love strong friendships. They make me happy. smile

Topher Grace's Eddie Brock was a whiny, dorky idiot who cries to God to smite Peter Parker.

This wasn't that different from comics!Eddie. I mean, Grace wasn't built like a tank, but he still played a guy that resorted to lies to get ahead and reacted with anger when he was caught.

The again, 616 Eddie was never the most complex character. The only time I felt he was well written was in the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon.
