Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up] No.

[up][up] Ah. I was gonna say, it'd be a little weird to do a movie/project based on the video game. But I think an Avengers Academy movie (based on the comic) could be interesting.

When we're done, there won't be anything left.

Something that puzzles me. If the Doctor Strange film is doing California Doubling with London standing in for NYC, why not just have that part of the film set in London in the first place? The movies have done a decent job of not making everything set there like the comics, plus Cumberbatch is British anyway.

I don't think we actually know if the movie is set in London or NYC. But they have been using Pinewood Studios to do a lot of interior scenes, so that might be it.

The yellow caps they put in the shot point towards New York. But I am disappointed, too. I wanted Dr. strange to be British and set everyone else but New York.

Just for clarification, Everett Ross is not related to Thunderbolt Ross, right?

I am always for more Martin Freeman.

Nope completely unrelated. He's a government agent that they assign to follow around Black Panther whenever he's in America.

Though it would be funny if they made them related here.

I really wonder about the emphasis on Germany...not that I am complaining, especially since they actually did film in Germany this time around, but it doesn't seem to be a random choice.

Something to do with Baron Zemo, maybe?

Wanda has a corset, she is very slowly converging towards her comics costume.

I'm kind of fond of the tiara, and would like to see it. But the Cape is eh for me though, considering other Avengers have capes all ready. And the new coat looks cool and makes for a nice middle ground.

I adore the coat. Plus, I am unable to see a cape without thinking "NO CAPES!" immediately. Hopefully Vision will never rue that he took inspiration from Thor. But those two are kind of able to pull the cape off, being more or less alien to out world. And I guess it just belongs to the get-up of Doctor Strange (Did you see the vid from the set? I love how it moves in the wind). But generally speaking, the less capes the better.

Thankfully Jack Kirby wasn't a big fan of capes.

So either someone's dying, Thunderbolts are showing up or Cap changes name to Nomad.

Edit:[up]Actually, Kirby liked capes but not on "human" characters. More godlike beings wearing capes was alright.

They better not kill Steve. I want all the main Avengers to last until at least Infinity War.

[up][up]I don't think the Thunderbolts would constitute a "controversial" ending.

I don't know, if the New Avengers are disbanded and replaced by a bunch of new "heroes" due to the events of the movie I'd say it would be pretty controversial.

But yeah, it's most likely someone big dying since they've filmed so many fake death scenes to hide the real one/s.

I really want the current Avenger team to be a mainstay. Mostly because out side of Cap, none of these characters have franchises of their own to give them focus.

And because I love Rhodey and Sam, and I don't want them to be forever in the shadows of the four BIG avengers; Tony, Steve, Thor and Hulk.

Noice. I forget how people hypothesized that he was Ross in the first place. Were there actual leaks suggesting he'd be close to T'Challa or was it general deduction?

General deduction. It was said he'd have a small role in Civil War that expands in a future movie, and it was noted that there weren't a lot of government characters he could be (since Fox owns Henry Gyrich).

Yay, Pepper!

I hope the controversial ending is her putting on the Rescue Armor and becoming a hero herself.

The only things the general audience would find controversial for an ending is the death of a longstanding Avenger.
