Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Anyway, Kurt Russell's confirmed to play Star-Lord's father
. Who's that going to be? My original theory was Adam Warlock to tie him into the greater Infinity mythos, but chances are if he's going to show up they'd use someone younger. And it also makes the theory he's Starfox doubtful.

It frustrates me that most of MARVEL's female or characters of colour are tied up with the X-men at Fox, but fox don't seem to be doing anything with them outside of ensembles.
Fair, the obvious choice, a Mystique solo film, won't happen because Jennifer's latex allergy makes the role impractical for her, and the most recognised female characters are either tied to actresses who don't have the pull they once did (Hallie as storm, which is sadly probably the best character to adapt) or have new actresses not yet tested in the role (Sophie as Jean Grey, or again, Storm)
Ellen as Shadowcat is probably the best bet. The character isn't too obscure, Ellen is super well known. The character doesn't exactly lend herself to a genre like other characters do. (though I'd have said the same about Gambit)
To be fair, Marvel doesn't really do much with them outside of ensembles either. Outside of the unfortunately short-lived Storm series from last year, the X-women generally aren't solo players.
As a whole, any X-Man not named "Wolverine" has historically had a hard time standing on their own as a solo property, except for a few stand-outs like Deadpool and Cable.

I guess Mystique is the easiest character ever to recast after Jenny leaves this summer. I'm guessing with Deadpool now a franchise they'll want to flesh out the 2010s with a cast of mutants they can dip into.
And you are depressingly right. There isn't a lot of female solo stuff. Still, Fox is the only one of the three studios without a token female led solo film in their slate.
My guess is that they'll maybe recast Mystique post Apocalypse if audience reaction to her makes the hat trick and move the character to Deadpool's era, hopefully in time for the X-force team up with Wade, Cable and Gambit? I'm kind of curious for an eighty year old immortal Mystique with a fresh actress' take.
The problem with fox's X-men is that they focus too much on one or two characters. Even First Class and Days of Future Past do it. Damn near every other character might as well be furniture or sophisticated robots posing as people. It's why I refer to the first 5 movies as Wolverine 1 - 5.
There are some many wasted opportunities in these movies.
The Fox films only ever focus on Logan Xavier or Erik. Futures Past at least elevated Raven a fair bit.
You'd think the solution would be to have solo movies for the minor characters so they have more to stand on. I would love to see Knightcrawler be a pirate or Storm be worshiped as a Goddess, or Jubilee... become a vampire?
Scott and Jean have a disadvantage of not having much to do outside of the X-men plots anyway.
Actually I kinda disagree; the X-Men movies, at least most of them, HAVE substance beyond all the fight. Also, while it's true that they tend to focus on one character or two over the rest, I would like to point out that unlike Avengers, they didn't have the luxury to have each character introduced in a separate movie.
There are probably worse covers to call back to. No harm in acknowledging that Civil War got some things right.
Oh God! Natural light!Honestly I think people are being harsh with the Civil War comics. Don't get me wrong, it HAD some issues, but going as far as calling it a Dork Age? Yeah, sorry, there has been much worse, both before and after. I personally enjoyed the main book.
Civil War IS a Dork Age, but I don't know why anyone thought they wouldn't call back to it seeing as how they're, ya know, making a movie out of it.

f I wanted to be a complete dick, I'd blow a dog whistle next to him and watch him flip his shit.
Your momma's so dumb she thinks oral sex means talking dirty.
