Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Because we don't need another POC covered up in makeup.
Huh? Wouldn't a POC, even covered in makeup, be more diverse than, you know, a non-POC? I don't understand this.

And because there's kind of an unfortunate association with yellow peril characters being turned green. See also: the Mandarin sometimes, Prince Xizor, Ming the Merciless.
Wait what? I never saw the Mandarin nor Ming the Merciless as green.

I think Mandarin was green in one of the 90s cartoons.

The character is called MANTIS. And a Mantis happens to be green. Though they should pick a shade which is distinctively different from Gamora's.

She doesn't need to be green. Her being green was a relatively recent development in the grand scheme of things. She looked like a normal person for much of her history.

Let us not forget that Draz used to be green and in the film he's more of a gray and red.

Yep, because Gunn thought he and Gamora looked too much like each other IIRC(should've let Gamora have the yellow/golden eye markings Gunn...).

I would love it if she can change her skin colour to blend in.

Ming was given green skin in the Defenders of the Earth cartoon. Mandarin in the Fox Iron Man cartoon. Prince Xizor is just awful.

Also I just noticed by listing these that they're all also reptilan. Huh.

@Swanpride: She's not actually a bug though. You're thinking of Bug who is a bug. Mantis is part plant. Although I'm not sure if she actually conducts photosynthesis. But she has antenna. Truly she is an enigma.

[up] Like a chameleon?

A bug tree chameleon person.

Explain yourself, Mantis

[up]Well, Mantis are well-known for their abilities to hide themselves. Plus, it would be strange if that were simply her name. It would make much more sense if Quill either gives her the name as a joke or at least he making a joke of her name happening to sound the same as a word of his planet.

In the comic, she was probably named for the martial art that she does not explicitly practice.

It was also, oddly, her only given name.

Although she has used the pseudonyms Willow, Lorelei and "Mandy Celestine" at various points.

Anyone else often refer to Guardians of the Galaxy as "the best Howard the Duck movie ever", or is that just me?

Sort of seems weird to recreate that particular moment when there hasn't been an established "friendship"/relationship between DD and Punisher. Unless of course this isn't the scene where Punisher has DD tied up and tries to make DD shoot him to prevent him from sniping someone in order to prove s point.

[up] They could probably do that without a friendship between them.

True but I feel it may not come off as strong unless that element is in its undercurrent.

Exactly, really twists in the gut of Matt and shows off just how messed up Frank is.

It doesn't necessarily need to have the same gut punch behind it. They could just use it to help further the ideological conflict.

You are right.

I just find personal character anguish delicious sometimes.

Don't know if any Frank anguish is going to be able to match Foggy yelling at a Matt who has had 11 kinds of shit beat out of him anyway.

Maybe they do build a 'friendship' and the trailers have been lying.
