Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'm glad there's already such a positive reception to Civil War. It really does seem like Feige and the Russos did their work in preparing a response to almost every major complaint aimed at the film since the title was announced, and had an appropriate Author's Saving Throw to address them, assuming they weren't already aware of them from the getgo and already headed it off at the pass.

Like, aside from what they're going to do with Wanda pretty much every single major reservation of mine has been acknowledged by the people making this movie at some point, whether in interviews or in leaked information.

I think that they did what they planned from the get go. I never understood where the worry about it being Avengers 2.5 were coming from. After all, Winter Soldier already had a ton of characters.

I think they simply tried to make it Honest Trailer proof again after it worked so well the first time around.

On a different note: Marvel is really spoiling us this week. First the Daredevil trailer, than two awesome episodes of Agent Carter (still reeling from them) AND the first glimpse on the secret warriors. I have the feeling that the second half of Ao S will deliver everything it promised. Maybe even more. And tide us over until Civil War.

Kurt Russel is officially confirmed for Guardians 2. Some other cast members are announced but no word on who they're playing.

I hope Elizabeth Debicki is playing a villain, she was great in the otherwise so-so Man From U.N.C.L.E. film.

And what a team! Glad that Nova Prime will be back. Hopefully that mean that Rhomann (or is it now Denarian?) Day will be back too....

Also just in case there was someone left still in doubt, Gunn officially confirmed on Twitter that Pom Klementieff's character is Mantis.

So...maybe they go to Mantis to ask her to help out with Baby Groot? To ensure that he grows healthy and as fast as possible? (Hopefully they'll clarify if Baby Groot is still Groot. I know that he is in the comics, but I need confirmation).

Fuck yeah, D-Man! D-Man once ran over a bunch of serpent-themed villains with a truck while playing Creedence!

Excellent Mantis links

Probably won't influence her MCU portrayel but I quite liked her appearances in the silver surfer book where she was basically backpacking through space, saving the universe because all her destiny stuff was wrapped up and she had nothing better going on. Also she had gained plant powers by sleeping with a psychic tree meat puppeting her dead boyfriend's corpse.

Or that she named her celestial messiah baby after the sequoia because it's the noblest of our earth trees

Comics are amazing sometimes

Pretty much. He was homeless for a while, had some mental problems. And then he died. But he's better now!

He has a past in professional wrestling also. IIRC he's stronger than normal humans due to a serum or something.

Elizabeth Debicki must be "Proxima Midnight"

There's a lot of people she could be.

I think she will be one of two people: the Matriarch of the Universal Church of Truth (in which case, she's a villain) or Moondragon (in which case, she could be a hero or neutral, but Drax would figure out that she is his daughter).

I could see her as the Matriarch.

The UCOT is probably the easiest faction in the world to introduce because all you need is a character handing out books to make the characters start talking about them. Or just show a Cardinal and have Rocket go "Cardinals. I hate Cardinals".
