Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yeah. The concentric circles of his shield make it look like he has sinister hypno-eyes.

Oh, that was supposed to be a spider.

I thought it was a shrunk down version of this angry Japanese guy face. [lol]

Also, yeah, Captain looks so damn sinister. I kinda like it, actually. grin

For some inexplicable reason, Cap's image reminded me of this.

I think it is cool...it's a stylized version after all. Though...why has Hulk a pair of shoes as eyes? It look good, but are shoes a symbol for him?

Follow The Path: Star-Lord. Check it out if you want to see how Quill has changed over the years and how he suddenly changed hair color and personality after Bendis took over and the movie being made was decided.

May I mention that the movie-inspired look is way cooler than what he wore beforehand?

The movie look is roughly inspired by the dna costume.

No Bendis, that was bit good costume design.

The movie look is fine though overall I prefer the blue with red trim uniforms I've seen the Got G in the EMH cartoon.

Gamora's in a string bikini. In Space.

Oh, comics.

[up]You ever wondered why the Avengers comics keep having Black Widow with her zipper all the way down on missions while her solo books keep it all the way up when not seducing or "off the job"? At least Gamora zips up a bit when in battle or things are getting serious(and she's very confident in her own sexuality).

Well seems to be just Gamora because that's Gamora. Quasar on the far left there is properly dressed. So yeah, characterization distinctions as portrayed by clothing choices.

Also, isn't comics Gamora some nigh-invincible warrior queen or something?

Anyhow, yeah, digging the uniforms.

Comic!Gamora has a great healing factor that let's her come back quickly from small things such as Thanos breaking her neck with a energy blast while raging, being bathed in sunlight from a star right next to the base they're in(which makes her have short hair and a larger cloak for an arc due to her hair taking longer to grow back and her skin being all new) and be without armor vs a swarm of mooks and not have a scratch on her a minute later(the enemy blood is harder to get out but hey, she enjoys being covered in it).

Her general power level is around Ronan-level(who she has thrown around before) which means she's probably the most powerful woman in space with people like Nova Prime, the Heralds of Galactus, Gladiator, Thanos, Magus etc running around above her(the gods, Celestials etc should never be used for these kinds of rankings). On Earth she would kill pretty much any hero that isn't invulnerable, has superspeed or can fly fast aside from the upper middle weights and the heavy weights(and probably Spider-Man). She's probably in the top 5 sword users in the galaxy(and the best one on her team going by a illusion she and Phyla experience).

Her biggest weakness is a lack of ranged attacks outside of using guns(that she doesn't) and that she isn't the smartest tool in the box compared to Quill, Warlock and Drax when he feels like it. She works best in combat as a defender of the ones working out a way to win(Warlock making a spell, Phyla creating a construct, Groot opening a door etc), taking on the elite soldiers with Drax or as a berserker taking out all the mooks without trouble.

Her arcs with Warlock, Phyla, Nova and the others are great and shows that she isn't just a pretty face with a big sword. She's a woman who started out on the wrong side with Thanos, abandoned it for the right one, had her friends and allies die or disappear while she remained, joined the last remaining army in the galaxy to be part of the last light in the darkness that ruled and then decided she should join her new friends team to find a meaning with her life outside fighting and do good without expecting a reward or people to love her. She would give her life for her friends even if she knew she might not make it back.

(Btw here's Gamora in her really old outfit from her "Warlock's companion" days taking out Thanos for a time with a nerve blow)

Welp, you've done a better job convincing me Gamora is one of scariest and most dangerous killers in the galaxy than the movie did.

Again, I stand by my point Gamora seemed like a way more awesome character in the comic. She was kinda reduced to the classic only sane woman/chick in the movie. Not necessarly bad, but that made her kinda bland compared to what she's in the comic.

I rather have a layered character than a badass one - and rather one who has some smarts than one which is good with guns.

Yeah, she's all Informed Attribute there.

I don't recall her ever losing a fight against anyone except Nebula. Every other time she either kicked ass or is visibly holding back / let them win as with Drax.

So I don't know how informed her badassery is in the movie. Seems pretty explicit. The main problem is that the film has many Big Guys (Drax gets hit with the same problem), so she doesn't get many sweeping action scenes and instead is mostly used for intimate one on one fights.
