Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

They're going with the Avengers people know.

According to Comicsalliance we will be getting a new Civil War trailer this Sunday.

[up][up]According to the Coca Cola article a 60 second TV spot with some new footage will play at Super Bowl so it's probably that.

Nope they say it's two distinct things.

Since then we’ve done some digging and it turns out Coke and Marvel are teaming up for a 60-second Super Bowl commercial that will air during the second quarter of this Sunday’s game. It will not appear online prior to the Super Bowl, so the first time you see it will be during the game itself. But, is it actually a new trailer?

No. Ad Age is reporting that the Coke/Marvel Super Bowl commercial was put together by famed ad agency Wieden+Kennedy, perhaps best known for some of their Nike spots. Marvel wouldn’t need an ad agency’s help cutting together a trailer; they’ve got agencies specifically for that task in Los Angeles. Also, one of the cans used to promote the Super Bowl commercial features The Hulk, who we all know is not in Captain America: Civil War.

It seems as if this may be more of a partnership between the two brands, where some Marvel characters show up to promote their favorite soda. There may be some footage from existing Marvel movies, but don’t expect this spot to be the full trailer from the film.

But, now some good news: there will be a new Captain America: Civil War trailer during the Super Bowl, or perhaps more specifically before the Super Bowl. Make sure you’ve got your butt in front of the TV right before kickoff to get your first look at the new footage.

As far as the Coke/Marvel Super Bowl commercial, as soon as it airs during the game, we’ll make sure to have it right here, so you won’t have to wait long to find out what exactly that is.

Hmm, interesting. Probably means the Super Bowl ad is more of a "I'm Captain America and I drink Coca Cola" thing.

What do we want to see from the trailer?

Watch the Coke commercial be something like, "I'm Tony Stark, and this is my favorite soda on the planet."

I'm still a bit pissed Tony didn't have a actual Demon In A Bottle arc that ended with him giving up all alcohol.

  • RHODEY: I know you aren't happy about it, Tony, but it's for charity. They've pledged half a million dollars for it.
  • STARK: You already convinced me. (removes obscuring cloth from the armor) I wasn't happy about it, but I spent last night working on it. When we fly in at halftime, everyone will see it.
  • RHODEY: Wow. I'm impressed. I expected you to put up more of a fight over something like repainting the armor with the Coca-Cola logo. It really looks great.
  • STARK: Well, I'm glad you like it, because this is your suit.

Except then he took a drink of alcohol in Avengers, so not really.

I think Favreau tried to do a direct adaptation but it got nixed. The whole "not allowed to depict drinking or smoking onscreen, even in a negative context" would make it pretty hard, if not the original reason it wasn't done.

I was responding to Lordof Lore's original comment about Tony simply having a Demon in the Bottle arc in the movies before he edited it to say "that ended up with him giving up alcohol."

The MCU depicts drinking onscreen all the time. Tony's always got a glass of something.

I think you can have the characters holding alcohol and being drunk from it, but not the actual physical act of drinking from the glass. Or I'm wrong.

Are they actually MCU books or just Marvel books? Are they following the continuity of the film exactly?

Yeah nothing there says they're mcu books.

Well, they are based on the movie versions of the characters rather than the comics apparently.
