Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The only thing I want is the return samuel Stern.

It is quite disappointing that Samuel Stern had been easily defeated by weaker avenger.

Samuel Stern could be the "Big Bad" of fourth season of Agents of Shield or an ally of Loki, Zemo or Thanos in Infinity War.

That plot point was so long ago I can't ever see them bringing it back up.

It could be done as something like Samuel (probably with an actor change, if you ask me he should be played by his EMH voice actor: Jeffrey Combs) being introduced in some SHIELD prison (or a regular prison, or a HYDRA prison, point being somewhere he's locked up) and a Prison warden-psychiatrist reads his rep sheet to remind the audience who he is and voilá, instant character introduction.

And then he breaks out in some insanely awesome way, of course.

Since Sterns is the archenemy, so if they ever do any more Hulk products him not appear in some capacity is a wasted opportunity.

They even did Mandarin in an extremely roundabout way.

Hey, remember when we talked about minor heroes or teams who could work well in a show or movie(around the time the Netflix tv shows were announced)and we talked about how a New Warriors movie could be pretty cool?

They all pretty much died at the start of Civil War and one of the last surviving members(who is popular enough to get solo books, got to be in a video game and helped launch a whole bunch of Cosmic comics you might've heard of)has been MIA since 2010.

Well, today Marvel brought back one of the dead ones! They literally teleported him from the moment before a big explosion killed him and his team in the past but for the moment Night Thrasher is back(and is getting a big push in-universe?).

Did you know he almost got a TV series back in 2002? Maybe they're thinking about another try? He's pretty much the only New Warrior aside from Nova who would work in the current MCU.

Not to be dismissive, but doesn't that belong in the comics section?

Sorry! Had a massive fangasm after seeing it and posted it in the first thread I remembered that we had talked about him before. He was like the first black superhero I ever saw in comics(I had seen Green Lantern on TV before)and he was just so cool he left an impact on me.

It's cool. I thought you were seguing into a "could this mean the New Warriors might show up in the MCU at some point" topic anyway.

Which is a pretty interesting idea. Imagine the idea that the New Warriors were doing right before everything when pear shaped, of a superhero reality show starring a bunch of inexperienced but endearing idiots (one sane man) doomed to die, as an actual tv show in the MCU. And not like Agents of SMASH.

Back at the Squirrel Girl movie conversation, I thought a cool way to do Speedball would be to have him be Doreen's on again off again superhero love interest, but instead of him going off the deep end after a disaster he's just going through ridiculous phases as he tries to pin down a hero identity. Penance being his emo phase. Every once in a while he'd pop up in the movie with a new persona as a running gag.

Why is there a black British Punisher and a Hulk in body armor?

British Punisher-looking guy is Outlaw who was inspired by the Punisher into pretty much becoming the British Punisher.

The hulk is the evil future self of the Hulk now calling himself Maestro.

(The guy sitting down is Stick, Daredevil's mentor)

I tried Googling this "Outlaw" character and all I got was a female mutant with the name.

It's Marvel, multiple characters with the same codename. Here he is.

If they do introduce the New Warriors it's definitely for the better that it's not tied to Civil War or anything.

Guillotine (the hooded chick), by the way, is one of Marvel's most intensely metal characters as of late.

In short she's a 27 girl called Jeannine Sauvage whose family has been cursed to wield a sentient evil sword (called LA FLEUR DU MAL, a.k.a the Flower of Evil) that thirsts for blood of men, is fueled by bloodshed, and speaks to the wielder's mind.

So she thus decided to use that blade for good despite its bloodthirst and the legacy of her less charitable ancestors.

THAT'S FUCKIN' METAL AS FUCK, DUDE

Stuff like that makes me wish the MCU adapted minor characters as cameos or references more liberally.

Why is there a black British Punisher and a Hulk in body armor?
This is from the book Contest of Champions, which is about a, well, contest between the Collector and the Grandmaster (based on the video game which is based on the comic book) on the remnants of Battleworld called the Battlerealm. Both the Collector and the Grandmaster have a "Summoner" who can summon heroes, both ones that will stay on the Battlerealm and ones called "Ringers" who will be sent back without memory of their stay, just so no one will know.

The Collector's Summoner is the Maestro, who is the Evil Bearded Future Hulk, and his team consists of Outcast (British Punisher who now uses non-lethal weapons), Guillotine (legacy heroine with cursed sword that craves blood), Stick (Daredevil's previous dead mentor), Ares (the God of War, also brought back from the dead), and now Night Thrasher (which the Collector decided on his own and the Maestro made a facepalm, because, seriously, Night Thrasher fights with a skateboard).

The Grandmaster's team is actually made up of entirely alternate universe Marvel characters, because he vowed he would leave Earth-616 alone. So his Summoner is the Punisher 2099 (psychotic cop from the future) and his team is Bullseye (AU Elektra), the Sentry (AU Golden Age version who is also the Void), an AU Venom who killed Spider-Man and now wears his costume as a cape, and the Hulk (AU Rick Jones).

It's a really fun comic.

[up]x4 Yeah like, everything before Night Thrasher's company collapses and he's forced to make the team into TV stars to pay their bills(which lasts for just a few issues before Civil War hits) is pretty good and the first few arcs are golden.

The initial team is also almost completely owned by Marvel/Sony AFAIK. The only one who's a question is Namorita who might be with the Namor rights and she might not even be that needed since her lovestory with one of her teammates would probably be thrashed(since the other teammate went on to have a relationship with Gamora who's already in the MCU).

Edit: The writer of Journey Into Mystery, Thor, Young Avengers etc got asked about his dream casting for one of his characters. He said Eva Green as Hela from Journey Into Mystery.

I see that name thrown around a lot when it comes to fancasting Death (not Hela though). Is it because of him or is there something else specific about her repertoire?

Marvel Avengers Academy is out now. It has Alison Brie as Black Widow and John Cena as the Hulk. But more interesting to me is that it has Priyanka Chopra as Ms. Marvel.

Oh also the grown up superheroes are college-aged now for some reason that will be explained in story.

I am filled with equal parts anger and rage at the apparent lack of the kids from the comic.
