Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I feel the MCU can do without Squirrel Girl. There's so many other more interesting characters to use.

As Professor Farnsworth said, "You mustn't interfere with the past! Don't do anything that affects anything, unless it turns out you were supposed to do it, in which case for the love of God, don't not do it!"

[up] No, their aren't! Squirrel Girl is the best!

I would only like to see Squirrel Girl show up if it's in Infinity War.

And then Thanos defeats her as effortlessly as he does anyone else, and gives a scathing speech to the effect of "What did you expect to accomplish? I am Thanos of Titan. I command all aspects of reality. You talk to squirrels."

And then she's never mentioned again.

Yeah, not a fan of Squirrel Girl. tongue

Squirrel Girl beating up Thanos would be great.

Squirrel Girl is the best.

If anyone can replace Captain America, it's Squirrel Girl.

[up] This.

I want a gag where she meets the Guardians of the Galaxy.

She gets so excited because she thinks her powers are expanding when she can understand Rocket.

Rocket's confused and the rest of them stifle laughter.

If Khfan must get out of this thread for disliking Squirrel Girl, then I'll gladly be exiled alongside him.

Squirrel Girl is the living embodiment of a overused joke.

Squirrel Girl is the hero we need but don't deserve.

See, if I want an easily-portrayed-as-obnoxious character who survives encounters way out of their league and exists in large part to poke fun at various comic/superhero tropes and make fun of the big players, I'll stick with Deadpool.

And since he's with Fox, I'll settle for Spider-Man. tongue

Has anyone actually been reading the North/Henderson run?

It's legitimately funny.

Like, I'd be the first to agree that "Squirrel Girl shows up and defeats Big Bad" is a dumb gag. But that's not really what the character's been about for like a year now.

Read the current comics. You're missing some good shit.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

[up][up][up][up]

HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE SQUIRREL GIRL, YOU MONSTERS!

Seriously, though, her current series isn't actually just made up of that running joke. We actually see how she defeats people (usually through The Power of Friendship) and she does struggle to defeat some people (like Doctor Doom right now). Also, it's hilarious, as it's written by the same person who does Dinosaur Comics.

Didn't one writer have a one-off gag where She beat Thanos, and a watcher showed up to say "Yeah, that's the actual Thanos" and then the SAME writer had Thanos say "Lol, I can make clones that fool the watcher"?

I remember that being a thing that happened.

Squirrel Girl's like Saitama or Bugs Bunny. She's a gag character, no point in getting upset at her.

[up][up] Yeah, Dan Slott did both stories.

[up] She's actually expanded from being a gag character in her own series. I mean, she's going to college for a Computer Science degree.

If it's only her current series that breaks away from that, I'm still not interested. In part because I absolutely can't stand that artwork.

Oh, man, the stuff where she's fighting Doom has been great, mostly because it's nice to see how she deals with someone who straight-up can't be reasoned with.

Squirrel-Girl: You put on a good show, Victor. Talking like a monster, acting monstrous, dressing up as scary as you can. But I've got some bad news for you: I don't believe in monsters. Beneath that cold metal mask, you're still human. Human like me. I believe you'll listen to reason. And I don't believe humans stop being human even when they pretend their monsters.
Dr. Doom: Then you shall die.

You put on a good show, Victor. Talking like a monster, acting monstrous, gluing purple fur on your armor, juggling, spinning plates, doing jazz hands constantly. It's an impressive, extremely confusing show.

Blackjack, maybe! I dunno if hookers are in the spirit of the thing.

I mean at the very least we should maybe call them sex workers instead.
