Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up] It's possible. Economical, even. We'll see where they go with her.

Would make sense with how the MCU likes to make things simple even if I don't like it. Why have 2 death gods with one for asgardians and 1 for everyone else? The comics have multiple death gods and devils and demons but I can't see the MCU going into a examination of all the different realms of death or how Mistress Death is the most important one(partly because if she dies death dies with her and the universe will overflow with life which isn't a good thing).

It would be pretty cool if every single death personification in the MCU were played by Cate Blanchett. Maybe Thor ends up seeing Lady Death during Infnity War and openly wonders why she looks so similar to Hela and Lady Death just answers something like "All deaths lead to me"

"All you Fascists bound to lose."

If they take away Hela being Loki's daughter it would be an interesting interpretation of her character. Plus it would keep Asgard relevant once the Thor trilogy's wrapped up.

Marvel!Hela isn't Loki's daughter.

Is Cate Blanchett being in Thor: Ragnarok confirmed or just a very persistent rumor?

[up] A quick google search says that it hasn't been officially announced by Marvel.

Having said that, I remember hearing about an interview where Mark Ruffalo let it slip in an interview that she was in talks to play a villain in Thor 3, but didn't specify which villain. It was only later that reports of her playing Hela emerged.

She kind of is, in a weird way. It's a long story.

[up][up]There's pretty much only two major female Thor villains. Hela and the Enchantress.

[up][up]Yep, we went over it when the rumors started and people here went "Isn't Loki a bit young to have a grown up daughter?".

I'd love Blanchett as a older Amora btw.

[up]But Cate Blanchett is too old for Enchantress.

I prefer a younger actress, as Alice Eve.

I know that many think that Alice Eve is too adorable as to play a villain, but I think that this makes her perfect for this role.

I'm hoping that MCU!Hela is Loki's daughter and a Composite Character with Lady Death, whom Thanos is in love with.

[up][up] Asgardians are thousands of years old, so she really isn't too old.

I think Cate Blanchett would be absolutely perfect.

I'd buy her as either but Hela seems more suited to her talents. Enchantress is more of a sexpot, while Hela would be the one where serious dramatic chops would be more warranted.

I keep reading Thanos' bubbles as a Nice Guy trying to get out of the Friend Zone. Just needs a fedora.
Pretty much. Essentially from what I've read, Thanos' story is that he's interested in Death, but she's not interested in him at all, and that she'd really appreciate it if he quit trying to impress her, especially since she doesn't like the way he flirts. But Thanos is so arrogant that he can't see that she outright hates him. Which is why it bothers me that Jim Starlin eventually decided to have them end up together, since it goes against their prior characterization (and "keep hitting on her until she says yes" is, of course, not a good message to begin with).

(Also, fedora-shaming is a meme that needs to die)

I actually wonder what Thanos' endgame is. I hope it's something more concrete than "I'll kill have the universe to impress her" like in the original story.

I'm just holding on to the entirely futile hope that we see the Thanos-copter (which is totally a thing) in action.

The best part of that isn't even the Thanos-copter. It's Thanos being taken to prison by normal cops.

If the Arrow TV show could find a way to use the boxing glove arrow in a way that actually made sense, Marvel should be able to at least get Thanos inside a helicopter.
