Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

A person's race or sex isn't the defining attribute of their identity but, like, it is an attribute. A black person in the U.S. is unlikely to spend their entire life without ever, even once, encountering prejudice. Few if any women go through life without forming at least one experience that's affected by their sex. Many of these moments are easily overlooked if not outright unnoticed if you aren't part of the group affected by them; only a tiny sliver of racial or sexual oppression takes the form of a something big and noticeable like a burning cross, violent rape, etc.
Sex, ethnicity, religious affiliation, educational background, profession, sexual preference, gender identity, favorite hobby. There are countless elements that make people different, and all of them have an influence on how we interact with the world and how the world interacts with us.
The same is true of white men. The only reason we don't think being white or being male colors a person's experiences is because white men are assumed to be the default. We're so used to hearing the stories of heterosexual white men that we don't think of it as the Straight White Man's story. We just think of it as the normal experience for people.
If you assume that you can just write a black guy as having exactly the same history and background as he would if you were writing a white guy, then you're not really writing a black guy. You're writing a white guy wearing blackface.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.It doesn't. It relates to the larger conversation that was taking place, specifically as it regards to getting people of an ethnicity or sex involved in a series that's going to be starring a character of that ethnicity or sex.
Fact of the matter is, Danny's probably going to be white. Some people don't want him to be, because they want more diverse representation in the MCU. Some people aren't bothered by him being white, but still want more diverse representation in the MCU. Some people don't want more diverse representation in the MCU and would prefer if women and/or minorities stopped trying to get involved in their white power sausage-fest. And some people don't have a dog in the race one way or another.
Personally, I would rather skip Danny entirely, make him a supporting character in Luke Cage's series, and give Shang-Chi a show. That's what I want.
But what's probably going to happen is that Danny's going to be white.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub."Fabo" is short for fabulous (actually it's short for faboo which is short for fabulous, but either way). It was by way of indicating that I have no present beef with TobiasDrake with regards to the previous line of discussion. It's a word I use on occasion.
I saw no reason to continue that conversation, so I tried to change the subject. I suppose I could provide a tidbit more to it if you want, but you wouldn't like what I have to say.
Personally I'm in favor of the pokemon thing, e.g. I imagine Cap's favorite pokemon is Braviary. ;p
Too much discussion of other tropers instead of topic in this thread.
Reporting inflammatory statements will do more good than badmouthing each other.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Vision's brain is in the Soul Gem, not in the robot body. He will be inside the Infinity Gauntlet fucking up Thanos' shit.
Did anyone else find it weird in Ultron how Tony apparently had a whole buncha AIs sitting around in a cabinet somewhere?
And by weird I mean mildly disturbing.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Wait, isn't that the same argument behind "man with tits" complaints?
Also, over a week ago I brought up this topic
in the Race - Privilege, Relations, Racism, etc. thread (which in turn sprung from this line of discussion
on another thread) that asked for [ethnicity] characters in works in which their ethinicity wasn't either a major or minor theme.
Vision's powered by the Mind Gem, not the Soul Gem.

I am, indeed, very happy that Taika Waititi is directing Ragnarok.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.
