Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

...or it could turn all of them into Ensemble Dark Horse's and make a ton of people who only watch the movies interested in the Planet Hulk storyline. Also, Thor would be a second-stringer to Hulk for 1/3 of the movie: the first 1/3 wouldn't even have Hulk and the final 1/3 would have Thor take precedence over Hulk.
That's not really how Ensemble Darkhorses happen. You can't just have a character suddenly appear and then blam, they are an Ensemble Dark Horse. They have to, you know, have actual character and personality - much like Rocket Raccoon, who was given loads of character interactions and depth, as opposed to just "hey, look, a raccoon with a machine gun!"

Also, Thor shouldn't be a second stringer at all in his own movie.

well, with Hulk and Banner merging or something like that could be done after what happen in Ultron and how everyone use it for Hulk and decide that maybe he should be in charge for once.

Or I dunno, something like that, there is only so much you can do with "Banner is afraid of Hulk and cant live a normal life" before it become stale and predictable, even him with Natasha since repetion of Betty. some chararter devolptment would be welcome.

Really, shoehorning that Hulk storyline into the next Thor movie just for the sake of a small handful of comicbook fan wanking is a bad idea all around. It reeks of Fan Myopia, and it's not like Thor movies have been all that great to start with. tongue

(Not bad, mind you, but not great.)

Yeah, but even if the Thor parts are meh, at least we'll have 1/3 of a great Hulk movie!

If only 1/3 of the movie is good, that's still a bad movie. Shoehorning in a completely different plot and completely different characters that don't have anything to do with Thor would just make the entire movie more confusing.

Hulk steal puny movie.

Actual in-universe reason Hulk gives for why he's in space.

I know I'd like for a third Act that is almost entirely a Big Badass Battle Sequence featuring Thor's posse, the Warbound, and the armies of Asgard and Sakaar.

No matter how many times you try and sell us this pitch, we can't see it as a good idea.

And I'd like a pony, but I still realize that owning a small horse within a no-pets-allowed apartment the size of a shoebox would be a bad idea.

...was that mean? I don't mean to be mean, I'm just saying that no matter how cool it would look, it would still be a bad idea. It wouldn't fit in the movie at all.

Look, at this point, either Loki steals the movie, Hulk steals the movie, or some minor bit character steals the movie.

Marvel already have problems with Loki not stealing the movie like the last one, having to inject planet hulk would be VERY confusing as hell.

PMC, because you (or anyone else) want to see something or think it looks cool doesn't necessarily mean that it a) will work, or b) actually will be cool.

I'm not saying "if you're not a professional your opinion is complete shit", but tropers (and in general almost every J. Random Internutternote ) all too quickly get hung up on what they personally want, while ignoring or handwaving away anything that even suggests that their ideas won't work as well on screen (or in print, for books and comics) as well as they think it will.

Personally, I think Planet Hulk would work great as a Netflix mini-series. I know they don't exactly have the budget for it, but if they did, it would be awesome.

I'm not the only person hoping for this since hearing about how Hulk has a large role and that it's set in space. I'm just the only one (that I've seen) to create a plot outline of how it could work.

I've said all I have on the subject. The plot of Planet Hulk simply won't fit or fit in a Thor movie. And since that's all I have to say, let me post this:

As I said before, I care more about Ragnarok being a solid movie on the character and emotional investment front than any concerns about planet hulk or whatever.
