Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

A YA movie would most likely require a in-universe time skip of ~8 years after a Phase.

Could have Fury die of old age, Clint becoming a archery teacher for the rich(with a certain girl attending his lessons) to bring in money to the family in peacetime etc.

The big issue is Cass Lang, if they put her in the movie. If she's the same age as her actress, then we've got several years before she's even a teenager.

Another is Runaways. The main way I would see a Young Avengers movie working with the MCU's tone is by having a bunch of kids caught trying to survive a very serious, deadly and bleak situation, which is all the worse because they have no way out but to try and fix it themselves. Which is Runaways' whole bit.

For a Young Avengers movie, Marvel could just do a Time Skip and recast Cassie Lang with an actress who's actually in her late teens.

I mean, even in the original comic Cassie was only 14 anyway.

I would really like Kate and Eli to turn up. Of all the Young Avengers, they'd be the easiest to adapt since their backstories don't tie into any of the existing Avengers. Eli is a bit tied to the concept of Captain America but that's simple to write in. You could also arguably adapt America without giving any details about her home dimension other than "my moms died and I left and now I can't go back".

Eli is related to Isaiah Bradley, the black Captain America, who hasn't been introduced in the MCU. In fact, there's no indication that a version of the Super Soldier serum was tested on a black man named Isaiah Bradley in the MCU yet.

They also never mentioned him or Patriot during the Cap 75 Years special despite bringing up people like Diamondback etc.

Patriot would be easy enough to retcon in. There's a lot about the WW 2 years in the MCU we've never seen, so they could easily say they tried to recreate Cap by experimenting on a group of black men.

The much bigger elephant in the room right now are Speed and Wiccan. Their ages already made very little sense in the comics, but it's an even bigger stretch here since Wanda is in her late teens/early 20's at the absolute oldest right now.

The basic premise of Planet Hulk is: Hulk is a gladiator, makes friends, escapes, has a romance with The Dragon and learns her tragic backstory caused by the Red King, then overthrows the Red King to become King himself with The Dragon as his Queen. That could work fine as its own movie, but it could also be the second Act in a Thor movie.
It would definitely not work as the second act of any movie. You would have to compress all of that down to around 30 to 40 minutes and they wouldn't have time to do most of the character or world building necessary for us to care about anything that happens. And then, of course, the plotline either ends with Hulk getting a happy ending or everyone dying, so I really can't see either one happening in the middle of the film.

So no, they really can't do a Planet Hulk movie right in the middle of a Thor movie.

So the big question would be, is there any posibility to have a planet hulk movie soon? or the way everything lie down make this imposible?

[up][up]Or, here's something: make them not Scarlet Witch's children.

I mean, they aren't even technically her children in the comics, either. She used her powers to have children, but their souls came from Mephisto and then when they vanished, those souls were reincarnated into the past. There is probably no way that could happen in the MCU.

[up]Not at this moment, since Universal has the distribution rights to any Hulk movie. If they renamed it, possibly.

Just have Hulk not go back to rule Sakaar until after Ragnarok is dealt with. These aren't complicated changes to be making. Hulk's plotline doesn't NEED to be relevant to Ragnarok, just to be a way to introduce Hulk in space and his new world and get him into the story, as well as have SOME version of Planet Hulk on the big screen.

Random rambling.

You know what?

For all the complaints I have about MCU, I have to admit one thing.

They never made any bad movies. At worst the movie was bland or mediocre.

Introducing Planet Hulk would needlessly complicate things for the movie. And yes, Hulk's plotline does need to be relevant to the film - everything needs to be relevant to the film or else you have disconnected scenes that shouldn't be in the film in the first place.

Banner/Hulk could easily be introduced on Earth. He doesn't need to be introduced on another planet.
