Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Regarding Peter Parker in the Quinjet
:
Two things: Dude, is that a bruise on your eye? Also, is it me or is Tom looking a lot like Tobey Maguire in that picture?
I think that Alan Rickman was great in the role of Severus Snape. I nevertheless think that he was too old for the role and in order to make it perfect, I would have loved to see this performance from an actor who was in his early 30th when they made the first movie.
I feel the same about Idris Elba as Heimdal. He does a great job, but I still would have preferred this performance from a guy who looks more than an actual norse god.
I mean being accurate to the myths is a ship that sailed when they gave Thor blond hair instead of red.
Plus the enchantment on Mjolnir.
Marvel Asgard was always not myth accurate.
For instance, they never did an issue where Odin forces Loki to seduce a horse so that Odin doesn't have to pay a contractor. Which, honestly, would be a good reason for Loki to scheme to take over Asgard.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersYeah I'm with Gaon on Heimdall. Weirded out by the casting initially, but not really angry, the film gives a perfectly fine reasoning for why it's the case, and besides he played the shit out of that role, to the point he's one of my favorite characters in both movies despite not actually getting to do a lot on screen.
@Wack'd I think a lot of Portman's disinterest in the role has more to do with the Executive Meddling drama surrounding Patty Jenkins who she personally vouched for.
Someone on the Thor Fridge page pointed out that Heimdall being black actually makes sense since in the Norse myths Heimdallr said to be the father of "the holy races", which is sometimes interpreted as humanity.
But he's also called "the whitest of the gods" so eh. Pick and choose; I pick Elba.

The only one I'd disagree with is MCU Avengers Cap.
(Though I do have a fondness for the dumb Avengers leather jackets since they were around when I started reading comics)

Forever liveblogging the Avengers@Targetmaster Joe I know. That's the first thing I thought, that he looks like Tobey Maguire.
Apparently, he fell off the set recently and that's what the bruise is from.
Crow: There's a plot?So since we're talking fashion, can we talk about War Machine (Iron Patriot is a stupid name, and I will never use it :p)? I saw a very brief part of Iron Man 3, and when I saw him, for just a second, I thought it was a cameo appearance to show us that Tony had finally talked Steve into letting him build a Captain America Iron suit. Was very disappointed to find out it wasn't.
On a totally different note, can we talk about AOU for just a minute? Specifically, the part where Ultron captures Natasha and she builds a transmitter to lead the Avengers to her. I know this has been very controversial, but I just thought of an explanation I don't recall seeing yet. Maybe she built the transmitter instead of just leaving, because she was trying to lead the Avenger to Ultron, rather than her.
"okay, but why couldn't she escape and then lead them back?" Because after being mind-whammied by Wanda she wasn't sure of her cognitive ability to escape, lead them back to right place, and spot any minute changes to the environment that could indicate a trap.
"why couldn't she set up the transmitter and then escape, then?" Because she assumed as soon as Ultron realized she'd escaped he'd start checking for things like transmitters, listening devices, etc. and destroy them. And then we're back to my previous point.
Another reason for her to stay put: if the Avenger were coming to get Natasha, they'd assume she was bait for a trap and proceed accordingly (she hopes). If she escapes and they go back in full force, they might not be as cautious as they should be. Plus, if Ultron was going to talk at her, she might actually get some info that could help.
Or, maybe it really was just shitty writing and I just wasted a lot time doing mental gymnastics
. That's always possible.
Spiderman does lots of jumps and flips and what have you. Even relegating most of that to CGI or stunt-men, I imagine the role is a very physical one.
Plus, he's got to do this in figgem spandex. No fancy dancy supersuit, or magic hammer sentai armor or even military gear. Nope. Just what he, or Gwen, or MJ could patch together on a freelance cameraman's budget.

Still sort of miffed Heimdall and Sif aren't related in the MCU(brother and sister in the comics). Could've just said she was adopted by Heimdall's family after her own got killed or had him adopt her as his daughter. Would've helped both characters.
