Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

So, fairly likely rumor going around that the reason LEGO Avengers is missing certain(non-Fox)characters(they aren't even announced as DLC like the Thunderbolts, Ant-Man and Civil War characters) like the Guardians is because LEGO Guardians is planned for 2017 with the cast of gotg 1 and 2+other cosmic characters from the comics like the future/3000 guardians, Captain Mar-Vell and Nova etc.

I'm just waiting for LEGO to do the coolest thing ever: Marvel DC crossover game!

It's more likely than the comics ever crossing over again(relations between DC and Marvel have been sour since Marvel told comic stores to outright burn DC's comics in exchange for Deadpool alternate covers a few years ago)since the makers of the LEGO games are already owned by Warner Bros.

I still want a Marvel fighting game by Netherrealm(who're also owned by Warner).

Shame that neither DC/Marvel crossover answered the one question everyone wants to know the answer to (along with a million other questions everyone wants to know the answer to): What happens if you give Hulk a Red Lantern Ring?

Red Lantern Ring: Bruce Banner of Earth, you have great rage in your heart.

Bruce: Oh, god please no!

aftermath: HULK SMASH PUNY SAITAMA! HULK LITERALLY STRONGEST THERE IS!

No surprise there...what is the point of bringing all the actors otherwise?

Didn't the sales for the female Thor drop into the cellar after the first issue?
Well, I don't see what that has to do with anything, but the first issue of Mighty Thor apparently sold 112,053, while the second sold 70,331. So not that much of a drop-off - pretty regular, actually. It's still one of their top-selling series and is always selling around 70 to 80,000.

In any case, for the MCU, Legacy characters don't really make much sense because everyone knows who the Avengers are in reality.
What does secret identity have to do at all with being a Legacy Character? Hell, currenty, everyone knows that Sam Wilson is Captain America and knew that Steve Rogers was Captain America before him, but that doesn't make any different (well, okay, it makes a difference to those who say that Sam "isn't my Captain America," but it doesn't make a difference legacy wise).

Hell, none of the Captain Marvels ever cared about their secret identity that much and they're pretty much the best example of legacy at Marvel with the line pretty much going Mar-Vell>Monica Rambeau>Genis-Vell>Phyla-Vell>Khn'nr>Noh-Varr>Carol Danvers.

Is it Khn'nr and Noh-Varr? Khn'nr was the Skrull who took Mar-Vell's place during Secret Invasion (he pretended he was Mar-Vell from the past) and eventually defected (and then died), while Noh-Varr was called Marvel Boy at first, before then becoming the Captain Marvel for the Dark Avengers (and then defecting and becoming Marvel Boy again for Young Avengers).

I like that Thor vs Superman fight because later Thor asserts that he could totes beat up Superman if they rumbled again.

There are some good scenes with them which show the difference between them.

Thor can tell Superman that "Hey, I think you're good enough to wield Mjolnir"(which is pretty much his highest praise), but when he's with others he says "I'd totally win a rematch!". Also, Superman is really humble.

In fairness, the second link happened before the first one.

I really do love JLA/Avengers though. Its way better than it needed to be for a lets have you and him fight ON A UNIVERSAL SCALE thing.

There were so many good details like Captain Monicavel adapting to the green lantern wavelength or Wonder Woman beating the crap out of Hercules because he's a villain in her verse. Or Superman wielding Mjolnir and the mighty shield. Captain America very quietly commiserating with Batman for losing a sidekick.

Just so much good.

I always liked the theory that Magneto, at full power, could one shot Superman by sucking the sunlight out of him, like he once did to the Hulk by sucking the gamma radiation out of him.

It's been a while I think since Magneto has had full magistracy over the full electro magnetic spectrum though?

His powers don't really behave like magnetism that much. It's more like telekinesis that only works on metallic objects.

His powers are so inconsistent. I swear at one point he moves wood because there are electrons in carbon.

[up]x4 This minor joke is so good.

I really want one more crossover since so many writers work for both the big 2 now.

Edit: Speaking about crossovers, who wants a Avengers/Star Wars one?

Didn't the sales for the female Thor drop into the cellar after the first issue?
Comics blogger Phil Sandifer compared sales of the first five issues of female Thor to sales of the first five issues of the previous Thor series two years prior, and found that female Thor was consistently kicking its ass by about $20k in sales.

Which doesn't sound like a lot, but when you're in an industry that consistently struggles to break $100k on a given product...

This minor joke is so good.
Oh, the jokes even better once you realize that Mar-Vell is hitting Black Adam (Shazam's arch-enemy) and Shazam is hitting Ronan the Accuser (Mar-Vell's arch-enemy).

Most comics characters old enough have some power inconsistency but Magneto seems to have it especially bad. At one point he had low-level hypnotism because blood has iron.
