Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Oh and despite how she looks she's half vietnamese and half german(the movie will just make her a green alien like Gamora most likely

I'm not as sure of that because if they were gonna just make her a Rubber-Forehead Alien there'd be no reason to hire an Asian woman to play her in the first place. And we know they specified that they were specifically looking for Asian women for the part.

Comic!Mantis looked like a green asian woman with head antennas which is most likely how she'll look in the movie. I know Bendis had her looking way more generic and caucasian in her brief cameo(which showed he knew nothing about the characters because she showed up in a dress from the 70's and did nothing) but we all know Gunn doesn't base the movies on Bendis' version of Got G.

[up][up]Well, even if the character becomes a CGI alien, you can still code her as Vietnamese in consideration of the legacy of the character. Casting a non Asian decent actress to play a character normally thought of as half Asian is white washing, regardless of if you see her face; for one you're refusing jobs to actresses of Asian decent that should logically go to them, and more over you're invalidating people who identity with the character because of the character's ethnicity.

We need diversity in voice acting as well as in live action acting.

[up]That's my point though. If she were just playing an alien, it wouldn't matter. It's not like she's a very notable character where people would cry foul over them not casting an Asian person to play a green alien.

She already had antennae before she got green anyway.

They made Drax more grayish green than green so we wouldn't have two green people. So maybe Mantis will be not green.

What if they combine Phyla or Moondragon with Mantis and just make that one a space bisexual?

"at least three characters in the MCU can talk to ants."

And their movie is so far one of the silliest and light looking of marvel, so meh

About Natasha: while is typical for SHIELD, its become pretty much her signature uniform, unless she get her own in her own movie(in the case it happen) it would put it as freelancer with her own code.

Also...what about a movie with Scarlet witch and Dr.strange? both a magic users and they can provide a more mystical outlook to them(maybe Scarlet witch could gain her codename from there) granted I still bitter that Wanda manage to get away with the crap she pull in Ao U but that is beside the point.

Crazy prepared. It takes a certain kind of person to think they need to keep a tank on their person regularly.

But yeah, that was awesome.

...actually, if you think about it, since shrunk items keep their density, Hank Pym must be seriously fucking strong. Like, part Hulk, or something.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Hank was actually my second favorite character in that movie.

Probably.

But, like, if shrunk things don't keep their density, most of the shit Scott does doesn't work.

The movie doesn't really give a shit about it's own rules. I have to admit, I admire that about it.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Shrunk things keep their density...unless it's funny. Pym particles are basically narrativium.

I think it's that their mass decreases, but at a slower rate than they shrink. Either that, or the Square-Cube Law is GREATLY exaggerated.

It is rather silly, yeah. Hank must have Hulk-like strength to carry that tank around.

Inversely, the supersized Thomas the Tank Engine shouldn't have been able to smash through the house. In fact, at that low a density it might have floated away like a balloon, or even sorta phased through the house like a ghost.

And that poor supersized bullet ant is likely suffocating to death. There's a reason Scott and Cross need hermetically-sealed suits to shrink and grow, after all.

But hey, the movie is awesome anyway, so...

I postulate that Hank was lying about the science behind Pym particles because like hell is he going to try to come up with an accurate dumbed down description of decades of cutting edge physics for a layperson

Or that Pym particles break physics because they're too afraid to talk back to Hank.

Okay, I take it back, this movie should've adhered to its own rules if only to make this happen. Either of these options are way funnier than Thomas just smashing through the house.

Reminds me of the episode of Thomas where Percy ran into some limestone and pretended he was a ghost to scare Thomas.
