Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Looking at the patterns, the spider webs look kind of random and haphazard. I wonder if it's supposed to be homemade.

the Jewel costume thing

That's literally the whole point of the character. She's not a superhero anymore. Putting her in bright spandex wouldn't have just broke the tone of the show, it wouldn't have made sense since she doesn't wear it in the comics either.

And I refuse to debate the Mandarin thing any further, but it's been stated multiple times why we didn't get the comic Mandarin, and I'll leave it at that.

The Jewel costume being taken out is for the better really. It wouldn't work for the shows to have Jessica's comic backstory in it.

I'm still amazed Trish had that mockup made. I'm even more amazed that she thought it'd be something Jessica would want to wear,

We can all admit that we wanted to see Falcon in the red and white, right?

I like how Marvel handles the costume issue. And I can't express enough how happy I am that the stupid Jewel costume never became reality. Especially since none of the other Avengers has an actual costume, aside from Cap, which is a mixture of combat uniform and costume. With Tony it is his weapon, with Bruce it's his inner demon, and with Clint, Natasha and Thor it is simply their usual clothes.

MCU Jessica being a goth just makes the costume even more outlandish, Patricia, you should know what your sister thinks looks cool by now!

Also it doesn't help that the 616 costume is intentionally meant to look childish because it was a regretful backstory thing.

I'm glad that MCU Trish has terrible taste in costumes, it makes comic accurate hell cat all the more likely in season two. (basically the only thing I want from season two)

Talking to birds is legitimately cool why doesn't Falcon do it anymore?

Also, the glorious thing about the MCU, is that there's always time to introduce something more comic accurate later.

Also it still annoys me that MCU daredevil doesn't have the latex suit. The movie proved it can work and you even have it in your opening credits!

Vision (maybe) not having a human origin with crazy cyborg brother, and Ultron (maybe) not originating from Hank Pym's brain waves also bother me. I'm fond of the Grim Reaper and I'm fond of Hank having an official Bi Polar diagnosis.

@X-men code names, I choose to belive Xavier intended his students to become celebrities and role models, so a catchy name helps.

Ok, about Natasha against AIM in a movie...yeah, that would definly help a lot, specially since as other said, I would be waaaaay better than other jerk in a suit(I mean, how many of them we already saw?)

[up][up]Consider we saw Natasha and Clint with civilian cloth of the time I will said they are their uniforms, just less comic-ish.

[up]Because while MCU can introduce comic things, even they have a limit and bird-taking falcon is waaaaay to much.

[up]Yeah, but it simply seem to be variations of the SHIELD uniform, not a special costume just for them.

I am tired of corporate villains. Darren Cross got a pass because he was a really well realised execution of sociopathy. But yes, no more corporate villains.

Like, maybe even hold off on the green goblin? Or if you do, frame him as a monster dad, not a business tycoon or mad scientist.

[up][up] at least three characters in the MCU can talk to ants.

If they are smart, they don't do the green goblin immediately, but introduce Norman Osborn early on, so that his turn will have more of an impact.

AIM Being the villains of a Black Widow film would be fine, but I'd only see it if MODOK was the Big Bad.

I want MADOK so bad.

When it comes to Osborne, I would like to play up the surrogate dad role he has to Peter.

In my opinion we need more villains of the fantastical or mystical kind like the Sphinx, Korvac or Umar(who I'm hoping will show up in a Strange movie later since she's also Strange's mother-in-law).

Vision's comic origin is a bit of a tangled soap operian mess that would need its own movie and then some to get going.

I'm not sure where you could fit "dead human memories in Vision" perhaps Vision acquires them, rather than always had them.

I actually like Vision's new origin. Turning Jarvis into him was one of the better ideas they had.

Turning him into JARVIS was a clever way to keep the spirit of his original origin without the ridiculous series of dueling "He's the Human Torch!" "No he's not!" "Yes he is!" retcons.
