Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Ravenclaw is the love interest house. All of its named members of note are someone's love interest.

Professor Flitwick perhaps being the exception.

It's so weird seeing a human sized absorbing man, I got to know the character in Earth's Mightiest Heroes where he's a hulking giant.

[up] Luna's nobody's love interest, as far as I can recall.

I at least take pride in knowing that I'm unlikely to ever screw up anybody's name as far as Harry Potter goes.

[up] Agreed. Topic people.

In regards to music used in the MCU, what does anyone think which movie has the best soundtrack?

The Avengers, hands down.

Easily Captain America: The First Avengers. Silvestri and Menken...hard to get wrong with that in the first place, but the patriotic tunes are spot on. And really, the Captain America song is so good, that I now think of "the man with a plan" first instead of the old Captain America song.

I'd say Guardians in terms of it's great use of pop songs in original and (at times) touching ways.

Toss-up between Ant Man, Winter Soldier, and Thor 1.

Love the work of Jackman, too, though - he is on the way to become my favourite Disney Composer of the 2000s after he delivered for Wreck-it-Ralph and Big Hero 6. I am really glad that he will take care of Civil war, too. I loved how he built up on Silvestri's work for The Winter Soldier.

[up] [up] Yeah, Got G is pretty good, too. The songs get all the attention, but the score is solid with some really brilliant moments in-between.

I'd say Winter Soldier has the best sountrack of the MCU movies. None of them are ones I'd listen to on their own, but the Winter Soldier soundtrack fits the action very well and has some strong motifs.

"Taking a Stand" definitely is one of the best Marvel tracks, and it's got a great credit sequence to go with it too.

The Winter Soldier's theme is also one of the coolest songs I've heard in the films yet. Got a nice Silent Hill edge to it.

And yeah, The Winter Soldier and Iron Man 1 soundtracks are the only ones that I liked enough to go listen to outside of the movie. So those are probably my picks.

It's a good credits sequence. I like it when the designers do something creative with the credits.

I'd like a really clever themed credits sequence again for Civil War.

Let's hope they do a better balancing act than Whedon.

Though that does bring to mind just who these 67 characters could be.

Just because the characters are all on their planning board it doesn't mean that they will all turn up.

Let's see, there is the original Avengers team (6) plus their girl-friends and wives (10, with we assume that Betty Ross is still in the picture), the new avengers team (14), the Agents of Shield (17, not counting the ones from the TV shows), Thors entourage (21), plus Loki (22), Plus Darcy and Selvig (24) Ant-man old and new plus the Wasp (26), the Got G (31) plus eventually Yondu and Kraglin (33), Thanos himself (34), Bucky (35), other more or less important side characters like Happy, General Ross, Luiz (38) - even without the TV shows there are certainly something between 40 and 50 characters which can considered important enough that you shouldn't forget about them, not counting some which are about to come, and others which died. You don't even need the TV shows to make a list that long.

Thanos will likely have his entourage from the comics in some capacity as well, if not some other returning villains like some have suspected.

I'm going to guess any hero who has appeared thus far in the movies and not died is fair game for appearing.

So I'm guessing possibly

Iron Man

War Machine

Black Widow

Captain America

Bucky

Hulk

Thor

Hawkeye

Falcon

Star-Lord

Gamora

Groot

Rocket Raccoon

Drax

Scarlet Witch

Vision

Ant-Man

Black Panther

Spider-Man

The Wasp

Mantis

Captain Marvel

I'm hesitant to add Thor's cast since we don't know who will survive Ragnarok but if the rumors about Valkyrie appearing in that movie are true I wouldn't be surprised if she shows up in Infinity War as well.

And then don't forget there is also the chance Infinity War itself will continue the trend of introducing at least one or two new heroes in the sequels.
