Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Feige also had this to say in Empire.

“The one is important,” said Feige of the Black Panther movie, which will be the last “Phase Three” movie before Marvel’s two-part Avengers: Infinity War event. “Not only do you get an unbelievable lead character, but you also get all of Wakanda which is a whole new setting and culture to explore.” And while Creed director Ryan Coogler is in line to direct, Kevin Feige assures Black Panther will have a “primarily African-American cast.” As for what the movie will be about, the Marvel producer says, “It's a big geo-political action adventure that focuses on the family and royal struggle of T'Challa in Wakanda, and what is means to be a king. T'Challa's story is very important to us as it links to the next Avengers films, which is why we brought it forward.”

I'm now wondering if Strange and Panther will introduce the final two Infinity Stones?

[up]As much as I'm turned off by the idea of the Eye of Agamotto being an Infinity Stone, there are flags here and there that hint that it probably will be. As for BP, I doubt an Infinity Stone will be in the film, let alone take precedence over Wakanda's vibranium mound as a potential MacGuffin. The last stone will probably be in Guardians 2 (Adam Warlock and the Soul Stone are kind of a staple pairing in the Marvel mythos).

Some updates on the other movies.

Feige seems to suggest Thanos won't be in Guardians 2, and that the next time he appears he's actually going to do something other than sit in a chair.

I wouldn't look too hard in that movie for Thanos. The next time we see Thanos he will not be messing around. It was be, 'Oh, that's why they've been teasing this villain for five years!'

And on Thor 3:

don't think people will read into that title alone [regarding] what the movie's going to be,” he said. “It's going to be, perhaps, as totally different from the two prior Thor movies as Winter Soldier was from the first Captain America. We want to take it to new places, we've got new characters that will show how big we're swinging on this. And we have a Hulk.

And he confirms what everyone has been hoping for.

The film takes place within the cosmos primarily which is to say, frankly, very little Earth.

It's been described as a buddy movie and he puts a lot of emphasis on it featuring new characters and feeling different from the past two Thor movies. I'm thinking Jane and her buddies are either being Put on a Bus or Demoted to Extra.

Chiwetel Ejiofor talks a bit about Mordo.

"In terms of his life with the Ancient One, it’s this long and intense relationship they have that’s just very deep and very connected," Chiwetel Ejiofor explained when asked by Entertainment Weekly about Mordo's ties to The Ancient One. "I think they both recognize in Strange this certain quality that they feel is going to be very useful in a situation they’re in — just by the nature of who he is, and the way that he operates, and the way his mind works, and the certain skill set and personality that he has. So, when they all meet, they realize that he’s somebody that can be plugged into this very surreal, interesting, sort of fascinating circumstance that they’re all in, and the dangers that they face. It becomes a process of assimilating him into their ways of life."

He sounds more like an ally than an enemy in that case, and it could be that Marvel will take a slow burn approach to turning Mordo into one of Strange's most fearsome foes. We likely won't find that out until next November, but when the actor was asked specifically if he's a hero or villain, Ejiofor responded: "Oh, he’s a very complex character that, really, I don’t think can be nailed down either way, you know. I guess it’s something to experience, is what I’d say..."

[up]Speaking in earnest for a moment, beyond a quick cameo, Jane and Darcy would exist for no other purpose but to garrote the plot with the red string in the case of the former, and provide so-so snark relief in the case of the latter.

I want Jane to appear one last time, but only so that they can tie off that plot thread.

Make mine Marvel.

She gets stuffed into a fridge strangled by a red string then Loki drops a bridge on her and finally Thor puts her corpse on a bus.

You don't need to kill Jane and Darcy to get rid of them. Just put them on a bus. The only reason Jane ended up in Asgard last time was because of a rather stupid contrivance.

Thor shows up on Earth. Says Vagueness Is Coming and he must embark on a grand cosmic odyssey to save the Nine Realms. Jane gives him a kiss and Selvig tells him they'll be rooting for him. Thor teleports off into space to save the day.

Boom.

We don't need to show Jane and her friends anymore for the rest of the movie.

Getting Natalie Portman just for a cameo seems unlikely.

Now if Darcy and Selvig, the two actually interesting ones of the human trio, went with Thor into space for some reason, I wouldn't mind.

I don't know. On one hand I wouldn't mind Jane and co. being absent, but at the same time I found it extremely annoying how both Avengers movies handwave none of the characters' significant others being present (because they are offscreen doing something awesome, we promise!)

Getting Natalie Portman just for a cameo seems unlikely.

Thor tells Jane what is happening over the phone. She gives an inaudible reply, presumably telling him she loves him.

Thor says he loves her too and then hangs up.

Then he goes off into space to do stuff.

So I guess I'm the only one here who likes Natalie Portman as Jane? I mean, she really wasn't given much to do in the first two movies, but that isn't her fault, that's the writers, directors, and producers.

Now, if they actually gave her something substantive to do, that would be great.

It's not that I don't like Natalie Portman as an actor.

Or the Jane Foster character.

Or even the Jane/Thor romance.

I'm just sick of Thor being on Earth.

My various fanfics.
