Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

They're saying season 2 will be so dark and/or gory that season 1 will look like a family film.

i haven't read i think anything of garth enis' punisher in particular, but I DID read some of the ghost rider stories he wrote.

jesus CHRIST that shit was grimdark. it reminded me of stephen king in a way. It fit the character like a glove though, and i imagine the writing style would also fit punisher.

Oh god.

Listen, Garth Ennis is only slightly less worse than Frank Miller in my opinion.

So the newspapers back in Denmark have sussed out that apparently Mads Mikkelsen (he of Hannibal fame in the States) is playing the villain in Doctor Strange.

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.

All the leaks point to Dormammu + Mordo as the Big Bad Duumvirate in Dr. Strange and people have been suggesting Mikkelsen as Dormammu for a while now. Could be interesting.

[up]I dont think so. The Well-Intentioned Extremist plus The Rival (to the Sorcerer Supreme) description of the mystery character Mikkelsen plays does fit not the Eldritch Abomination / Dimension Lord/ Complete Monster known as Dormammu even remotely.

The description of the Punisher:

"Viewers watching the show will be rooting for this guy with a gun but we’re also going to force people — the way we force Matt — to second guess themselves," showrunner Doug Petrie says. "Taking lethal justice into your own hands is in America in 2015 is tricky shit. We have not shied away from the rich complicated reality of Now. If you’ve got a gun and you’re not the police you’re going to incite strong feelings. We’re stirring the pot and we’re aware of the headlines where we live and we’re trying to get people to think."

"He has a different moral code," adds co-showrunner Marco Ramirez. "Matt is a devout Catholic — and you rarely see a character who’s a devote anything on TV. Frank has Hammurabi’s Code. It’s like letting a great white shark into the water." Actor Jon Bernthal also weighed in on what he did to prepare for the role as the magazine seemingly confirms that he won't be sporting that skull logo in a bid to remain incognito. "People have been coming up to me on the streets of New York saying, ‘Do not mess this up,’" the actor said before revealing that he spent months walking across the Brooklyn Bridge to the set of Daredevil in order to get into The Punisher's "isolated and joyless" headspace. "This character has resonated with law enforcement and military. He’s brought the war home with him in the worst possible way. And the best thing about him is that if he offends you, he just doesn’t care

Not trying to be a pessimist, but I like to think Season 1 of Daredevil had a solid balance between darkness and MCU attitude. Part of me really hopes they don't ruin that balance with season 2

Meanwhile, The Punisher is looking pretty rad. Even if he doesn't have his skull shirt...yet.

I would imagine MCU!Punisher will turn out so well, the guys who came up with the other Punisher movies will be headdesking themselves while muttering "Dammit dammit dammit dammit dammit dammit dammit..."

I just hope they don't put too much focus on the Punisher's character.

The Punisher is a Static Character. The characters around him grow and change and develop, but he remains ever the same. He's like a horror monster. What makes him interesting isn't Castle himself, but the effect he has on the characters who still have life in their blood. What makes him entertaining is the effect he has on his targets, who are usually well-fleshed out as a result of the story taking the time Developing Doomed Characters.

An interesting observation someone made about Strange's amulet.

Of course, thus far none of the Stones have matched their comic colors.

[up]Guess Adam Warlock will have to make do with his "standard" cosmic abilities (unless the Eye of Aggamotto is the Time Stone or its own thing, like Mjolnir).

And someone got their colors wrong.

violet - power

blue -space

red - reality

yellow - mind.

"In this film, the Eye is a very important relic that can be quite dangerous if used in the wrong hands, because it has the ability to do any number of things, the most dangerous of which is, it can sort of manipulate probabilities," Feige told Entertainment Weekly during an interview about "Doctor Strange." He then clarified, saying, "Which is also another way of saying, ‘screw around with time’ — which is part of our story."

Very interesting. I wonder, if the Eye of Agamotto is going to be the Time stone, whether the color switch with the Soul stone is being done the convenience of Adam Warlock's design, since green standing against orange might not look so good in live action.

It would fit with the other stones having had their colors changed thus far.
