Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Jane Foster's popularity is rock bottom in the MCU so I really can't see that happening.

[up][up][up]Wanda's powers weren't magic in the comics originally later. Maybe they could have her study with Doctor Strange.

Aren't Loki and Thor pretty consistently considered the only really good parts of his movies?

Besides Heimdall.

[up][up]I could see that happening under the right circumstances.

[up]Odin was pretty good too.

Heimdall becomes Thor. Sounds good to me.

But then who will be Heimdall?

[up][up][up][up]That's largely because the movies did a terrible job with Thor's world and supporting cast. At least in 2. I really hope Ragnarok uses the other Asgardians better.

[up]x6

Not to mention didn't Natalie Portman lose interest in the Jane role altogether? Especially after the debacle over Thor 2's directorship.

[up]Wouldn't be hard to make Jane "die" by having Mjolnir turn her permanently into Gwendoline Christie.

I suppose hypothetically that you could have a new actress in the role, given the combination of Portman's lack of interest and because the female Thor in the comics doesn't look like Jane Foster or Natalie Portman.

But think Eagal was probably implying his usual anti-diversity thing.

I have thought that perhaps Thor would be killed off and then reincarnated as Eric Masterson- who would still be played by Chris Hemsworth but would be a muggle who walked with a limp when not drawing on the Hammer's power.

[up] That would be cool too.

As weary as I am with Thor adventuring on Earth, I'll admit that's clever.

Thanks. To clarify, I don't know if there's any likeliness of them doing this. Just think it would be cool to have a Henshin Hero in the MCU, regardless of who it is.

[up][up]Though, if I had to choose anyone to replace the Odinson, it would be Beta Ray Bill. The idea of a bizarre alien supersoldier with the power of a mythical god just sounds cooler. But "Odinsdottir" has a bit more potential for a (relatable) character arc: Jane, in terms of psyche, is pretty much dead, her personality overwritten into a new one by Mjolnir but still retaining Jane's memories. It would be a inspiring tale of identity crisis (think of unfortunate real life cases where people's personalities get strikingly altered by brain tumors or head trauma) and a remarkable parallel to MCU Vision's origin.

Also Heimdall.

In Ragnarok, all are Heimdall.

So it's gonna be a long shoot for Idris Elba.

Gwendolyn Christy in the role is what sells it for me.

[up]Oh yeah. I want to see Hela in the MCU. Easily one the coolest Marvel villains IMO. Who doesn't want to see a half-undead, magical giantess with dominion over the Norse version of hell and a Badass Cape?

I remember back when there was a theory that Thor would die in Age of Ultron, and his 2017 movie would be him fighting his way out of Hela's domain.

She is plenty cool. We'be been promised a major female villain in Ragnorok, so if not Enchantres, then surely Hela.

I would like both, because, well the MARVEL IP is short on female Villains.

First images from Punisher Season 2.

Looks like they are going with Garth Ennis' take on Punisher.

[up]Ennis? Oh god, Season 1 is going to look like a PG family film.
