Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. Some rumors about the end of Civil War
. Obligatory "grain of salt" warning.
There is still a difference between "this guy is popular on Netflix" and "this guy carried a movie that made us $700 million."

Those were lower key drama films not huge blockbusters.

"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsThis isn't really a disagreement so much as an addendum, but I'd counter that while white racism is unambiguously the most broadly damaging form of racism in the US and deserves the most focus, that doesn't mean we should implicitly tolerate or dismiss the other kinds that are out there just because it's a bigger problem, since they can still have serious negative impact on the lives of others at an individual or communal if not necessarily a societal level. Not to mention a lot of nonwhite racists have used such arguments as power+prejudice=racism to excuse their own bigotry against other nonwhite groups.
More on topic is Cumberbatch the first Marvel lead to already be a triple-A actor at the time of his casting?

There is no way that before Star Trek Into Darkness came out in April 2013, Cumberbatch was not going to be a lead in 12 Years a Slave in August or The Fifth Estate in September.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.@ comicwriter- Not unexpected but unsure about some of the specifics- Although I thought it was likely that Cap would at least seeming be killed off in the movie, the fact that Chris Evans has more recently been up for more movies made me think there would be some ambiguity about him dying- like a "never found the body" type thing
While 12 years a slave is widely considered a great movie it isn't something that would have solidified his career.
And no one gave a shit about the Fifth Estate within 3 months of its release.
Perhaps carried was the wrong word but that was the movie that proved him to be a reliable blockbuster asset which is what Hollywood gears and centers itself around.

"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsI mean. All I'm saying is that Cumberbatch had already been offered two roles for 2013, both of which could easily make him a star (and you can argue at least one did.) He could've afforded to turn down Into Darkness.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Honestly my feeling is kind of "so what?" to the fact that he has been cast in a lot of movies.
Besides Into Darkness, he was a good fit for all of those roles. Like I'd also mention that he fairly recently played the lead in the Parades End min-series but was again perfectly cast, since the protagonist is this icy, repressed upper-class British guy.
He's not the only actor that seems to be in everything nowadays (Jennifer Laurence and Bradly Cooper also come to mind) but I don't get the idea of hating the actor, especially with such vehemence, because of that.
Yes, well, once the government starts locking people up for being white or white sympathizers, and releasing propaganda videos about the evils of white people, then we'll talk.
Alternate, equally snarky answer: It's only the new Red Scare if we assume the government during the actual Red Scare was mostly run by communists.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.
That.
Any rhetoric that implies that white people are the real victims of racism is flawed at a basic, fundamental level.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.
Well, I'll go one better and say the idea of inherent "victim cred" based on color, sex, orientation, etc. is pretty terrible. So you have a point.

Well, so long as you're not bringing the government into it and you're only implying that there's massive societal suspicion of white people on par with the suspicion of communists during the Cold War, that's fine then.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies....I mean, I fail to see how recognizing that some groups have historically and traditionally had access to more privileges and power than others has anything in common with witch hunts.
Eh.
I mean, I actually disagree with Wack'd, because I'd say that racism is more about discrimination than it is about prejudice, and. Like. White people might have people that are prejudiced against them for their race. But discrimination tends to be big, and involve lots of rules and codes and systems and the fact of the matter is that in most western societies, those systems typically tend to help white people more than anyone else.

Partly because said TV Show has an entire country that watches it.
And has episodes that are basically the length of movies.
And has a ridiculous amount of both fans and merchandise.
